Regular Exercise Can Lead To ‘Healthier' Belly Fat

Physical activity can change the composition of fat in the midsection, which may in turn reduce fat buildup around the liver and heart.

To explore the effects of years of regular exercise on fat tissue, researchers compared two groups of adults with obesity — 16 people who reported exercising at least four times a week for at least two years, and 16 who had never been physically active on a regular basis.

Investigators analyzed samples of belly fat tissue from just under the skin and found that the fat from exercisers displayed some key differences compared with their sedentary peers:

These results show that exercising regularly for an extended period of time seems to change fat tissue. If or when physically active people experience weight gain, it translates to more "healthy" fat in the midsection, rather than "unhealthy" fat around the organs (called visceral fat) or in the organs themselves, like the liver or heart.

Many people are confused or underwhelmed by the idea that they will be able to "store fat more effectively" or even think it's a bad thing, says Jeffrey Horowitz, PhD , a professor of movement science at the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

"We're not saying that exercise will cause people to gain more weight or fat. It's important to note that increasing the capacity to store fat does not equate to gaining fat, which requires consuming more calories than you are expending," says Dr. Horowitz.

It all began when I became obsessed with a photo I saw on the Facebook page of a writer I knew. She was backstage at a bikini competition in heels and a sparkly bikini, and she held a trophy high overhead. Part of me thought she looked ridiculous with her silver eyeshadow and her deep spray tan, but her smile told a story of strength and accomplishment. I couldn't remember the last time I'd felt strong or accomplished.

Bikini competitions do not fall within these parameters. Parading around on stage in a tiny swimsuit for a panel of judges went against my morals. So why was I so taken by the idea of possibly competing?

I told myself to get a grip and stop being ridiculous, and yet, as my 50th birthday crept closer, I couldn't let go of the idea. I reached out to the writer in the Facebook picture, who introduced me to the trainer who coached her for competition.

Dressed in my husband's shapeless SXSW T-shirt and my baggy gray sweats, I stepped into Team Fitness gym to begin a five-month transformation I couldn't afford. I've never had extra to spend, and certainly not on something as vain as a bodybuilding competition, but my husband said he'd figure out a way to pay for it to celebrate my milestone birthday.

Best Music Festivals Of Fall 2024 In Phoenix

Well, we've almost made it through another summer in the Valley of the Sun. And a record-breaking one at that.

Phoenix recently marked its 100th consecutive day of temperatures topping 100 degrees . The previous record of 76 straight days was set in 1993. 

As we head into fall, of course, those temperatures will start to dip at least a little. And with cooler temperatures expected, music festivals are making their return to Arizona in September, with Pickin' in the Pines and Coconino Campout bringing bluegrass and EDM to their respective dates in Flagstaff and Jason Aldean trying "that" in a fairly large town when Boots in the Park returns to Tempe.

Health-conscious Adults More 'In Step' With Their Fitness Than Their Pensions

A survey has revealed 37% would tell their younger selves to look after their future wealth as much as their health.

The survey for digital wealth manager Nutmeg revealed that Brits are almost equally anxious about financial well-being (42%) as they are about physical fitness (48%). It turns out people are twice as likely to invest in dietary supplements like protein shakes weekly (30%), compared to those who routinely use finance apps to manage their funds (16%).

Moreover, people are more inclined to keep tabs on their step count (37%) than stay informed about their investments and pensions (18%). A stark finding of the poll, which surveyed upwards of 2,000 individuals in July, suggests nearly two-thirds (61%) have never sought advice from a financial expert.

The Thorpedo was breaking records in the pool, representing his country in international sporting competitions — just casually being, you know, an Aussie Sporting Icon.

So when Network Ten came calling to chat about the possibility of participating in its long-running reality series The Amazing Race, Thorpe jumped at the chance — quietly excited that he'd finally get the backpacking travel experience he'd always longed for.

"He was my first choice — don't tell my family," Thorpe says with a chuckle. "My sister was like, 'Why didn't you pick me?' But I was like 'ummm' . . . I know my sister!

"(Christian and I) are both competitive — Christian is a PT (personal trainer), so he is still super fit, and we are both really determined."

Details of the new celebrity season of The Amazing Race are being kept under wraps, but what we do know is that the competitors include Natalie Bassingthwaighte and her sister Melinda Sheldrick, Matildas teammates Chloe Logarzo and Emily Gielnik, Pete Helliar and his wife Bridget, and comedian Luke McGregor and his mum Julie. They'll begin their travels in Buenos Aires, before crisscrossing the globe through South Africa, Namibia and Thailand.

The race will be overseen once more by its globe-trotting host, Top Gear Australia's Beau Ryan, who will be on hand to offer moral support as the competitors face — and we're quoting here — "some of the toughest challenges of their lives, while deciphering clues and tackling every Roadblock, Detour and U-turn thrown their way".

Thorpe admits there were moments during the competition, which sees participants race to complete challenges and be first to cross the finish line for a chance to win $100,000, when he wondered what on earth he was doing — especially as the race wore on and conditions got more challenging.

Best Music Festivals Of Fall 2024 In Phoenix

Well, we've almost made it through another summer in the Valley of the Sun. And a record-breaking one at that.

Phoenix recently marked its 100th consecutive day of temperatures topping 100 degrees . The previous record of 76 straight days was set in 1993. 

As we head into fall, of course, those temperatures will start to dip at least a little. And with cooler temperatures expected, music festivals are making their return to Arizona in September, with Pickin' in the Pines and Coconino Campout bringing bluegrass and EDM to their respective dates in Flagstaff and Jason Aldean trying "that" in a fairly large town when Boots in the Park returns to Tempe.

No Leggings? North Carolina Restaurant's Dress Code Draws Attention

A North Carolina soul food restaurant is receiving backlash for enforcing a dress code that some people on social media are calling backwards.

Kim's Kafe in Greensboro posted its rules regarding clothing on its Facebook page on Sunday, saying that they had been in place throughout the summer.

"People are not leaving anything for the imagination much now days (sic) so our dress code is strict," the restaurant wrote. Parts of the dress code is seen on the establishment's front door in photos the restaurant posted to Facebook. The dress code is also featured prominently on the restaurant's website .

Kim's Kafe declined to comment on the dress code when reached by USA TODAY on Wednesday, saying: "Not interested, too many of y'all (reporters) calling."

The Facebook post detailing the rules generated significant interest and much outrage, with over 10,000 comments as of Wednesday afternoon.

Multiple commenters compared the rules to the dystopian world of the Margaret Atwood novel, "The Handmaid's Tale."

Some commenters noted that the rules were incompatible with the hot and humid conditions that summer brings to the area. "It's summer and you don't allow shorts or white tee shirts? Ha Good luck," wrote Kaitlin Stover.

The dress code is legal , so long as it is applied to every single customer the same way, attorney David Daggett told WCNC-TV in Charlotte.

NobleCon Conference To Stage 'Shark Tank' Event To Promote Enterprises Connected With FAU

BOCA RATON — Three of the four investors featured on the ABC network's ⁘Shark Tank⁘ show will be scrutinizing business ventures associated with Florida Atlantic University in early December.

Kevin O'Leary, Robert Herjavec and Daymond John will be pitched by three businesses either associated with the FAU Tech Runway, student entrepreneurs or university alums. They will do so as the ⁘headliner⁘ moment at NobleCon, an annual financial investment conference held by Noble Capital Markets.

Nico P. Pronk, CEO and president of the Boca Raton -based investment firm, said the idea is to ⁘select three businesses that are going to pitch the sharks on the stage⁘ at the FAU auditorium.

NobleCon has made headlines before with big-name draws to its annual gathering. Last year's event featured a one-hour moderated discussion with former President George W. Bush and Noble Director of Research Michael Kupinski.

Pronk said the idea of a Shark Tank-like event featuring the show's stars originated with a Noble employee who knew an agent for one of the sharks. Pronk said the concept made sense and was perfectly suited for a longtime investor conference, NobleCon, whose theme and objective is to match up early-stage enterprises with investment capital.

The tie-in with a university business program was also an important selling point to the sharks themselves.

Palestinian Dance Group 'Canceled' From Clayton Art Fair

CLAYTON — A Palestinian dance troupe says it was asked to perform at one of the region's premier art shows, set for this weekend — and was then "canceled."

The St. Louis Art Fair, which closes down the streets of Clayton for a weekend each year, had reached out to the group, Canaan Wellspring Dabke Dance Troupe. The troupe then applied, picked a day to perform — and was then told they were too late to get in.

"I think we were canceled," said Lea Koesterer, director of St. Louis Friends of Bethlehem, a Pro-Palestinian nonprofit partner of the troupe.

"When they first reached out to us, I thought, 'This is fantastic,'" Koesterer continued. "I was so hopeful. When they canceled it, it was like a kick in the teeth."

The art fair approached Canaan Wellspring in late June, Koesterer said. An art fair intern contacted the new troupe — it had just formed earlier that month — after seeing a video on social media.

What Happened To Trunkster From Shark Tank Season 7?

For many, a vacation is a time to sit back, unwind, and relax. That being said, as much as people like to visit beautiful locales when they've got the time off, the actual act of traveling isn't so fun, especially with a lot of bulky luggage. The co-founders of the luggage startup called "Trunkster" hoped to change this with an innovative new smart suitcase that would make traveling with all your gear and gadgets less annoying and cumbersome.

Jesse Potash and Gaston Blanchet, co-founders of the luggage startup, appeared on "Shark Tank" Season 7, Episode 10 and hoped to raise more money to fulfill purchase orders they received from successful crowdfunding campaigns. With flashy marketing and a pretty solid pitch, the duo was able to wrangle a few offers, but that isn't the whole picture. While at face value, Trunkster seemed to be an innovator looking to disrupt the market, there was much more behind the scenes that would later be revealed after the episode. 

Potash and Blanchet sought a $1.4 million investment for 5% of the company, bringing the total valuation for Trunkster to $28 million. Hoping to improve on the tried-and-true design of modern luggage, the duo set out to disrupt the industry.

At first glance, it seemed like they may have been onto something. With innovations like a zipperless roll-top door, USB charging ports, and what the duo described as the world's first self-contained handle scale, it looked like the invention did deliver much of what typical luggage couldn't. 

However, issues started to arise when the sharks dug deeper and inquired about the company's $28 million valuation. Shockingly, Potash and Blanchet admitted that they hadn't shipped a single unit, and most of the company's value had been derived from presales via a Kickstarter campaign, along with highly-aggressive revenue projections for the future.

Since the episode aired, there's been no confirmation from either Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner on the deal being finalized, though it's widely speculated that the deal was never officially closed.

Love Island's Ronnie Vint has taken a brutal swipe at his fellow islanders, Ciaran Davies and Nicole Samuel.

Ronnie and girlfriend Harriett Blackmore were dumped from the Love Island villa on June 28, after receiving the fewest votes from the public.

Ciaran and Nicole came runners-up on the hit dating show after they were coupled up from the first week of this year's series.

However, Ronnie has taken a swipe at his co-stars insisting he and Harriett won't be following in the footsteps of the par by moving in together.

During an exclusive interview with The Sun, the 27-year-old made a dig at those ⁘rushing⁘ in their relationships.

He told the publication: ⁘She lives in Brighton, and I live in Dartford with my parents, so she's only an hour away.⁘

⁘After the show, everyone feels like you should be rushed into doing something that you don't want to do.⁘

⁘I'm 28 now, and she's 24. I don't want that, I don't need that – I want to be real with what I'm doing,⁘ he added.
