According to data published in 2023 , less than a third of U.S. adults get the government-recommended amount of physical activity in their free time: at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic movement (think brisk walking) per day, plus a couple muscle-strengthening sessions (such as resistance training) each week.

But research suggests there's another obstacle that affects all of us: our brains don't want us to exercise.

While hooked up to brain-activity monitors, people were given control of a digital avatar. They were told to move the avatar away from images of sedentary behavior that popped up on their computer screens and toward images of physical activity. Boisgontier and his colleagues found that avoiding sedentary behavior took more brain power, which suggests "we have an automatic tendency" to choose relaxing over moving, he says.

From beds for Roman newlyweds, to "hangover" benches for 19th-Century workers: the pursuit of a good night's sleep has followed us through the ages.

Amid the windswept expanse of the Bay of Skaill, on the west coast of the Scottish island of Orkney, is the ancient village of Skara Brae. This maze of fuzzy green mounds – large, single-room houses surrounded by thick walls topped with grass and connected with covered stone passageways – was abandoned some four and a half thousand years ago. But inside each residence are two objects that still look familiar to modern eyes – beds.

Like most ancient Egyptian beds made for wealthy elites, Tutankhamun's mostly consist of a wooden frame with a woven base of reeds or string. And as was customary at the time, the young king would have laid his sleepy head on a rigid, raised headrest each night rather than a soft pillow. This system was often found in hot climates , where it may have improved the circulation of air. It could also have been appealing as a way of protecting carefully coiffured hairstyles – the ancient Egyptians, including Tutankhamun's own grandmother, sometimes wore curled, braided, or plaited styles.

By the 17th Century, Europeans had a wide universe of beds to choose from. There were box beds ( Read more from BBC Future about why medieval people slept in cupboards ), beds strung with rope – which had to be tightened regularly, possibly leading to the expression "sleep tight" – and elaborate wooden four-posted beds like the Great Bed of Ware , which reportedly once slept 52 people. But one staple ingredient of early modern bedding was the "tick mattress".

These simple sacks, which sometimes reached gigantic proportions, were made of strong, tightly woven materials such as linen, known as "ticking". They could be stuffed with a wide variety of fillings, from feathers to straw. The specific packing material used could have a profound impact on the inhabitant's quality of sleep. According to the book At Day's Close: A History of Nighttime , one traveller passing through Switzerland in 1646 complained bitterly about having to spend the night in a bed stuffed with leaves, which "made such a crackling" and pricked his skin through the tick.

'Shark Tank' Features Baltimore Vegan Bacon Company

Shroomacon is the flagship product of Meat the Mushroom , the meat alternative-creating company the Montagues founded in 2021. The couple presented their innovation before the sharks of "Shark Tank," and their episode is scheduled to air on Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC. It will also be available for streaming on the TV network's website and Hulu.

Aleah said that her husband, a West Baltimore native and graduate of Edmondson High School , went vegan eight years ago for spiritual reasons. He later found health benefits to that decision, particularly related to a heart condition. After a year of being vegan, his well-being improved, prompting him to stay plant-based for various reasons, including being a father and wanting to be the healthiest version of himself.

Aleah said the venture started out with Marvin, a self-identified inventor, wanting to open a vegan restaurant in what he might call "the hood." She said her now-business partner experimented with multiple recipes during the COVID-19 lockdown and accidentally made what's now branded as the only vegan bacon on the market made of sliced mushrooms. He hadn't yet met Aleah, whose background is in digital marketing, products and retail.

A lightbulb went off for her husband, who realized he could reach more people with a product instead of a restaurant.

The pair quickly pivoted into manufacturing Shroomacon right here in Baltimore. Aleah, a native of New Jersey and alum of Rutgers University , told Technical.ly that production recently ramped up due to the "Shark Tank" announcement. Meat the Mushroom was a team of three and is now a team of six.

Even before its appearance on " Shark Tank ," Shroomacon had already caught the attention of vegan influencer and TV host Tabitha Brown, whom Marvin met in person at Memphis Vegan Brunch .

"We couldn’t afford to pay her to post, you know? We’re not there yet," said Aleah. "So she did that out of the goodness of her heart and out of sharing a product that she really loves. That, to me, made it all the better. … This was not a paid endorsement. This is America’s favorite auntie and she loves Shroomacon. So that was a great feeling."

After months of speculation, the Bachelor Nation stars officially confirmed they're dating, sitting down with E! News for their first interview as a couple.

As they recalled to E!, Justin met Susie in November 2022—not long after her relationship with former Bachelor Clayton Echard came to an end—when he needed a videographer for a work project and slid into her DMs. And it turned out they had more in common than date cards and roses, with the East Coast natives moving to Los Angeles within six months of meeting each other.

"Justin dated people, I dated people," Susie shared of the Bachelor in Paradise alum, who courted Katie Thurston before landing on the beaches of Mexico. "So the narrative of us being truly just friends was true."

It wasn't until October 2023 that they realized L.A. might just be the perfect place to fall in love. As Justin noted, they went to The Penmar's Sunset Sessions and then headed to a bar with some friends. But at the end of the night, they realized they were the only ones from their group still there. Susie had left her car at Justin's place. But before they headed back, she suggested they make a pit stop at a 7-Eleven for some snacks.

While they were "messing around with each other a little flirtatiously per usual," Justin said, Susie told him to stop playing around.

"I was like, 'Oh, this tone seems a little bit different," he remembered. "In the back of my head, I was like, 'If you're serious, I'm serious.' That was kind of my mindset. I had always been testing the lines, and I wasn't sure if she would go for it. So, I didn't want to cross those boundaries."

"We had a really nice conversation, and I kinda just went for it," he added. "I was like, 'Hey listen, I don't know where you stand on our friendship or relationship. Obviously, I respect you so much, and I appreciate our friendship. But I'd be lying if I [said I] haven't thought about if there is potential for more than a friendship just given the natural chemistry that we had as friends.'"

They ended up having their first kiss on his couch that night and decided to give their relationship a go.

‘American Idol’ 2024: Premiere Date

After an eventful last season, it's obvious people are itching for American Idol to return once again. Well, buckle up, because we're about to go on a new ride very soon!

You bet it is! Just a month after Iam's win, the show revealed it will be back for season 7 (and season 22 overall). Posting a photo on Instagram in June 2023, the competition series put out a widespread call for aspiring musicians to send in audition clips for the upcoming installment.

"Are you ready to SHINE? 🤩," read the official caption. "Auditions are OPEN! Submit a video of you singing today!!"

And if that wasn't enough, in July 2023, American Idol 's social team announced that the producers, Ryan and the judges would be going across the country looking folks.

It's time to mark your calendars because American Idol season 7 is set to air on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC .

"Take a journey with us as we make dreams come true. 🗺 ⭐️," he wrote in November 2023. "The season premiere of #AmericanIdol is February 18 on ABC and Stream on Hulu!"

News of a New York chapter follows months of planning by SONA to successfully create an East Coast hub. The organization held a meeting in September in Manhattan with local songwriters and publishers to talk about the possibility of establishing a New York SONA chapter and to find new board members. At that meeting, the group also discussed BMI's then-potential sale to New Mountain Capital for a reported $1.7 billion and how that might affect its membership.

"The Kardashians" star , who has worn the Balenciaga to the Met Gala and walked in one of their Paris Fashion Week shows, was named brand ambassador of the longstanding French fashion house Monday.

"For several years now, Balenciaga's designs have been a part of my many looks – and some of my most iconic fashion moments. This historic fashion house embraces modernity, craftsmanship and takes an innovative approach to design under Demna," Kardashian said Monday in a statement shared on her Instagram Story .

"For me, this long-standing relationship is built on mutual trust and a commitment to doing what's right. I'm excited about this next chapter for the brand and to become their ambassador," Kardashian continued.

"I appreciate Balenciaga's removal of the campaigns and apology. In speaking with them, I believe they understand the seriousness of the issue and will take the necessary measures for this to never happen again," she continued.

Riders take their horses from dressage to reining, showing off their best moves for the crowd. But for many performers, this stage is more than just beloved, it's a family tradition.

"Dancing with horses, it's a really unique show," said Sharee Schwartzenberger who's from Longmont.

Whether the arena is empty or the crowd is on its feet, when that spotlight hits, you can't look away.

"Eli agrees, yes," Schwartzenberger said. "He's got a great personality, he's a ham, he loves the attention and the people. And he loves this because you get a lot of people interaction."

Schwartzenberger grew up down the road in Longmont, first coming to the stock show years earlier to help her dad.

"We grew up coming down here and watching him compete," she said. "And as my sister and I grew up, we started competing as well and coming and performing. It's a family affair."

Horse dancing has always been a special tradition. The joy of performing takes center stage for both Eli and Schwartzenberger.

"As soon as you go through those gates, he gets all happy and he loves it. And he know at the end, he gets an apple," she said.

Comedian Natasha Leggero Gets Fully Topless On Stage To Make Point

After Bert's first set, Natasha took to the stage and pointed out his love for performing topless.

Heading to the stage after Bert – who gave her a very complimentary introduction – following his second set, Natasha danced on to Dr Dre's Still Dre featuring Snoop Dogg. Classic.

Icon alert, because Natasha then proceeded to take her jacket and t-shirt off, exposing her bare chest for the cause, as a man can be heard shouting. 'Holy s**t'. We love this too much.

She then put her jacket back on, and standing beside a camera filming the moment Bert can be heard in the audience joking, 'I've got to take my trousers off now.'

Very casually and without acknowledging her prior nakedness, Natasha launched into her set, in which she listed all the things that are bad about having a baby – peeing when you sneeze, c-section scar, abdominal separation, weight gain, and hair loss – she concluded it's been 'truly an amazing experience'.

Taking to social media after the topless campaign, Natasha posted the video and explained in the comments section: 'Bert took his shirt off so I did too. Improv said not to post but TMZ already did so f it.

'Should female comics be able to do the same things as male comics? Because I've also been thinking about trying to f**k my opener,' she joked.

Fans were absolutely loving the bold move, as Instagram user @creolemaroon said: 'This is performance art and I am here for it.'
