Basel, Switzerland Chosen To Host 2025 Contest

The Swiss city of Basel will host next year's Eurovision Song Contest from May 13 to 17, organizers announced Friday.

The mostly German-speaking city on the Rhine River bordering both France and Germany was selected over Geneva in a faceoff that generated buzz and anticipation across Switzerland.

"The government council is delighted with the decision and sees hosting the world's largest music competition as a great opportunity," Basel's city council said in a statement. "Basel will do everything in its power to be a good host."

The Alpine country won the right to host the annual glitzy song-and-dance extravaganza, which draws hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide, after Swiss singer Nemo won the contest's 68th edition in May in Sweden.

Swiss public broadcaster SSR-SRG said the selection of Basel and the St. Jakobshalle indoor arena was made based on criteria including the hall's suitability to host the event, sustainability and safety issues, funds made available and "creative ideas for the side events."

Nemo was the first Swiss winner since 1988, when Canada's Celine Dion competed under the Swiss flag.

The song contest is organized each year by the European Broadcasting Union, which is based in Geneva, with dozens of participating broadcasters.

Basel's city council cited an EBU study that found this year's contest in the Swedish city of Malmö reached more than 160 million TV viewers and over 80 million YouTube users around the world. It said the advertising value of the event was estimated to be 805 million euros (US$892 million).

BBC bosses have slashed Strictly Come Dancing's budget to cover new welfare checks after the show was rocked by scandal.

A New Path To Better Sleep: Evening Exercise Breaks

Now, a small efficacy study published July 16 in the journal BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine suggests a simple yet effective strategy to improve sleep duration: incorporating short resistance, or strength training, exercise breaks in the evening.

Based on the findings, this novel approach could transform the way people think about pre-bedtime routines and offer a practical solution for those needing more sleep.

Conducted by researchers from the University of Otago in New Zealand, the small study investigated the impact of regular three-minute bouts of resistance exercise every 30 minutes over a four-hour period in the evening.

Wearing activity monitors, 28 healthy female nonsmokers ages 18 to 40 years old, who typically experienced prolonged sitting during the workday and in the evening, either engaged in activity breaks or remained seated for the duration in a supervised lab setting.

The findings were compelling: The participants slept an average of 27.7 minutes longer when they took regular exercise breaks compared with when they sat uninterrupted. Additionally, there were no significant differences in sleep efficiency or the number of awakenings, indicating that the short exercise sessions did not disrupt other aspects of sleep quality.

Even the researchers said the results were unexpected. "Given the current sleep hygiene guidelines, we were surprised to see such a positive impact on sleep," said lead study author Jennifer Gale, doctoral student of human nutrition at the University of Otago.

There's no better way to get a taste of Fairfield County, Connecticut than with a couple lobster rolls …and maybe also some robot cows and animatronic milk cartons. On last Monday's episode of ABC Network's The Bachelorette , Jenn Tran — this season's leading woman — traveled around the country to visit the hometowns of her four remaining suitors.

She went on a run in Houston, played lacrosse in San Diego, and sat on a bench in Tacoma, Washington (so fun!), but without a doubt, the most iconic date of the episode was at Stew Leonard's grocery store in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Fairfield, where Bachelorette contestant Jeremy Simon is from, is pretty similar to any other coastal, suburban town within Fairfield County. There's a charming town square, long hiking trails through the forest, and some rocky beaches. But as someone who's also from Fairfield County, I can confidently say that if you're visiting the area for the first time, the absolute best thing you can do is visit the very first Stew Leonard's location, which opened in 1969.

Stew Leonard's isn't like other grocery stores. In addition to having seasonal produce, high-quality dairy products, and an excellent prepared foods section, Stew Leonard's is a theatrical experience. Rather than having traditional aisles, the eight Stew Leonard's locations are laid out more like Ikea, where shoppers follow a path that takes them through every section of the store, and along that path, are the occasional dancing and singing animatronics.

There's also a full butcher shop and fish market, a flower shop in the spring, a patio to order barbecue in the summer, a pumpkin patch in the fall, and Christmas trees in the winter. Plus, there's some of the best soft serve in all of Connecticut. (If you spend over $100 in groceries, you can get a free cone). It's a whimsical wonderland of food and Jeremy made the very wise decision of taking Jenn there for his hometown date. ⁘Amazing Race Canada⁘ Episode Features Challenges In Elora, Aboyne, Fergus

CENTRE WELLINGTON – Now in its 10th season, a recent episode of The Amazing Race Canada featured Elora, Aboyne, Fergus and Guelph.

The competitors' skills are challenged as they "race" around Canada, attempting to be the first team to reach "pit-stops," where they execute challenges and can find clues to the location of the next stop.  

They can win prizes for each leg of the journey, but if they finish last during any leg of the competition, they face elimination or a significant disadvantage during the next leg.

Planes, trains, automobiles, helicopters, boats, on foot – the modes of transportation are varied as the teams make their way through multiple provinces and territories.  

And the challenges they face are "related in some manner to the area of Canada wherein they are located or its culture," officials state.

They tried their hands (and mouths) at glass blowing at Kitras Art Glass in Fergus and created "live" paintings at the Elora Centre for the Arts.

Mark Lysadowski, executive producer of Amazing Race Canada , said choosing the Centre Wellington area as a location for the show was long overdue.

Lysadowski said he knows the area well and has visited many times, and knows the area is filled with art, agriculture and "a lot of great things" he wanted to share with the rest of the country.

Social Media Celebrates 'Pommel Horse Guy' On 'Dancing With The Stars'

Stephen Nedoroscik became an internet sensation during the 2024 Paris Olympics after winning a bronze medal on the pommel horse and helping the U.S. men's gymnastics team win a bronze medal in the team final.

Nedoroscik, known as the "pommel horse guy," appeared on "Good Morning America" on Thursday to announce that he will compete in the 33rd season of "Dancing with the Stars."

Nedoroscik was the first celebrity to be confirmed as a contestant for the 33rd season of the show.

DETROIT -- Michigan's first "Shark Tank" style competition is now taking applications from startups with innovative transportation solutions.

The winner of the inaugural "PitchMI" competition, which will be held Oct. 24 in Detroit, will receive $100,000 from the state to develop or improve their prototype solution.

"PitchMI will unleash Michigan's innovative spirit, strengthen our entrepreneurial ecosystem, create good paying jobs, and spur new ideas on the future of mobility," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. "I can't wait to see all the creative ideas and look forward to the competition in October."

Whitmer likened the competition to Shark Tank, a long-running reality TV show where entrepreneurs present their product or business to venture capitalists for potential investment.

Applications for the PitchMI competition are due by 11:59 p.m. Sept. 16. People can submit their applications at this link , which also contains information on eligibility and competition requirements.

Eligible pitches will focus on addressing mobility and transportation challenges in the state, focusing on improving safety, affordability and efficiency in how Michiganders travel from point A to point B.

‘American Idol' Seeks Ohioans To Audition

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — If you think you have what it takes to become the next "American Idol," this could be your chance.

For season 25, "American Idol" is currently conducting free virtual auditions with producers from individuals across the U.S. The show has assigned certain states to a specific audition date as people from across the country will be attempting to show off their talent.

Indiana residents can audition on Aug. 28. Ohioans are able to participate in auditions on Sept. 9. Prospective contestants unable to audition during the two dates could participate in the nationwide auditions on Aug. 23 or Sept. 11. A west and Midwest open call will occur Sept. 4.

Not a current candidate for public office or within one year following the final episode, if selected

American Rock Stalwarts NRBQ To Perform In Gloucester | Salem News Art Stars | Salemnews.Com

It's only fitting that one of most enduring American touring rock bands perform at one of the newest music venues on the North Shore next week.

The nearly 50-year-old NRBQ, or the New Rhythm and Blues Quartet, is scheduled to make a stop at The Cut on Wednesday, Aug. 21, with The Goddesses.

The Kentucky-native band was founded in 1965 by pianist Terry Adams and performed on stage for the first time in 1966. It now claims 12 past members, the current lineup includes Adams, Scott Ligon, Casey McDonough, and John Perrin.

NRBQ has released a series of albums in the past decade, among them Keep This Love Goin' (2011), Brass Tacks (2014), the five-disc, 50-year retrospective, High Noon (2016), and Turn On, Tune In (2019).

In 2020, the band released it first-ever rarities collection, InFrequencies. The album included career-spanning 16 tracks, 12 never-before released, include live and radio performances, soundchecks, and rare singles.

Its latest album, Dragnet, was released in late 2021, the band's first studio album since 2014. Released by Omnivore Recordings, it includes 10 originals, with contributions by every member of the band, and an arrangement of the classic TV theme song.

In Americana Highways, Bill Bentley wrote of NRBQ, "They play with such startling and powerful simplicity, a style that must be earned and not learned."

Meanwhile, Uncut wrote, "[it's] as though the history of 20th-century popular and unpopular music has gone through thorough, playful distillation."

However, Lauren said she wouldn't have sent the topless photo to her former partner if she didn't think it would be seen, and decided to post it to her own Instagram. 

'Got a little story for you guys. So about 10 years ago my ex at the time... leaked a topless photo that I sent him,' Lauren explained to her followers.

'Everyone ended up getting it. Like, everyone. It was everywhere, but it wasn't a big deal. We've all got tits and nipples, so whatever.'

Despite being blasé about the leaked nude, Lauren said she was bringing it to light because she has recently received messages from people who have the image.

One text message she shared to her Stories read: 'Hey, I got a couple photos of your boobs, Lauren.'

When the reality TV star responded with, 'What. Wtf?' they revealed: 'When ya [sic] ex leaked your nudes in Perth years and years ago.'

Intense Exercise Is Better For Stroke Recovery

A new study published in the journal Stroke suggests that high-intensity interval training improves cardiorespiratory fitness more than traditional, moderate exercise sessions in stroke survivors, leading to better heart health and higher fitness levels.

The results showed that the group who participated in HIIT had improved their cardiorespiratory fitness about twice as much as the MICT group by the end of the study. The HIIT group also maintained improved fitness at a check-in 8 weeks after the study had ended. Both groups had improved their walking endurance a similar amount by the end of the study, and there were no significant differences between the groups in improvements in cardiovascular risk factors or mobility.

The last I looked, your model has Kamala Harris winning the election at around 52 percent — it might be a little different today. But this has been an unusual election. How much stock do you put in your model right now?

At the same time, her momentum has been pretty good, which usually I dismiss, but we don't really know what the base line is here. Hillary Clinton, who was, I think, kind of a terrible candidate, won the popular vote by two points. Is she a little bit better than Hillary Clinton? Probably, right? So can she win by three or four? Well, if you win by three or four, then you win the Electoral College in most instances.

I don't think many people expected the turnaround in her numbers we've seen since she's become a presumptive nominee. She's gone to net favorables, which I would not have bet a ton of money on — at this speed, at least. People were looking at a lot of data on Harris and assuming that data was solid. That data was not solid.

I think this is on the higher side for a jump in favorables. But she was amazingly well organized at getting the entire establishment behind her within minutes of Biden announcing he was going to step down. So that suggested that maybe she did have more support in the party than she let on.

Love Island Games Season 2 Confirmed On Peacock

Good news for Love Island fans! Peacock just announced that Love Island Games is coming back for Season 2. That's something to celebrate!

Thanks to Ariana Madix and all of the messy singles of Season 6, the latest edition of Love Island USA wound up being a major hit for Peacock. It became the most-watched reality show on streaming in the United States. According to Nielsen, there were over 1 billion minutes watched.

With that kind of success, renewing Love Island Games was probably a no-brainer for the execs at NBC. We're going to have a lot more Love Island as long as they're pulling in numbers like that.

Season 1 of Love Island games aired in 2023 and gave us all of the chaotic drama that we live for. It featured 26 Islanders from the UK, Australia, Germany, France, and Sweden with the UK's Maya Jama serving as host.

Peacock hasn't announced if Maya will return to host , but they did confirm that the format of the show would be the same as Season 1. Islanders will be faced with team challenges and couples challenges, ultimately working to be crowned the last couple standing. Once again, new bombshells, eliminations, and recoupling will wreak havoc as the season progresses.

Amazing Race Canada Comes To Guelph And Elora

Over the weekend, teasers showed the seven remaining teams rappelling down the Elora Gorge and visiting the Guelph Civic Museum.

Local partners, including Elora ⁘ Fergus Tourism, Visit Guelph, Wellington County, and RTO4, worked with Insight Productions and CTV to bring the show to the community.

"The main reason we chose the Fergus, Guelph, Elora and Wellington County Region is because we have never been. It's always been on my mind of destinations to showcase on The Amazing Race Canada," said Mark Lysakowski, executive producer and showrunner at Insight Productions. "While the region is well-known in South and Central Ontario for its wide range of industry, farming, arts, and education, we don't know if its as well-known from coast to coast to coast and that is one of the primary missions of The Amazing Race Canada – to showcase and celebrate the people and communities large and small to a national audience."

Viewers are invited to watch this week's episode on the patio of the Guelph Civic Museum on Tuesday from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.

The Fergus Grand Theatre will also be hosting a viewing party of their own. Doors will open at 8:30 p.m.

This is The Amazing Race Canada's 10th season. A team who participated until they were eliminated third was a duo from Ontario, one of whom is from Erin.
