In Cue The Sun: The Invention of Reality TV , Pulitzer-winning television critic Emily Nussbaum says female contestants were chosen based on how likely they were to have a meltdown on camera, and were plied with booze to encourage unfiltered behavior.

Adding to the chaos on set, she writes, is that the show's creator Mike Fleiss and executive producer Lisa Levenson - both of them married - were having a barely concealed affair.

She quotes casting director Marki Costello as saying that no woman was too off-kilter to cast as a bachelorette: 'Unstable and pretty? That's gold.'

She writes: 'Costello created whiteboards with photos and mini-bios, with bullet points suggesting qualities that might make the women crack — "Daddy's Girl," "Recovering Anorexic," "Just Got Dumped."

Alex Michel was the first bachelor. According to the book, the women were goaded into humiliating themselves in an attempt to impress him

'From Costello's account, Fleiss didn't care as much about those backstories as the other top brass: He just wanted "petite blondes with big tits." (Fleiss denied he cared about cup size, just "beautiful blondes.")'

And alcohol proved to be a crucial ingredient to the show's success. Nussbaum recounts how, on the first day of filming, the women were deliberately plied with free drinks - and the results got messy.

Clearview Couple Joins The Amazing Race

Julia Viola and Olivia Curto are two women who love a challenge. When Season 10 of CTV's The Amazing Race Canada premieres on July 2 the pair will be among 11 teams taking to the start line in Niagara Falls. Their competition includes former professional basketball players, an ex-NHL player, actors, wrestlers and personal trainers.

Over the course of 10 episodes, the teams will be required to figure out clues, navigate unfamiliar areas, interact with locals, perform physical and mental challenges, and travel by air, boat, car, taxi, and other modes of transportation. Teams are progressively eliminated at the end of most legs for being the last to arrive at designated pit stops.

Season 10 has already been shot, but the winner will not be revealed to the public until the final episode airs in September. Viola and Curto are prohibited from discussing the outcome of the race but Viola describes the experience as very positive.

At the beginning of production they were forced to surrender their cellphones and credit cards, forced to rely only on their wits and finite resources to complete various challenges.

Part of the appeal of participating in The Amazing Race Canada was their love of travel, and the desire to discover more of their own country.

Viola says organizers can throw anything at contestants, and they have to be ready to be tested mentally and physically.

"I'm surprised at how proud I am of us as a team, and individually," she said. "We never argued and we had great communication. We discovered we are able to flip-flop roles, energy and personalities."

Curto is good at puzzles, and attention to detail. Viola is described as the more athletic of the pair, and says she is typically very calm, but has a fiercely competitive streak. Neither is a stranger to competition, having completed several sprint and Olympic- distance triathlons. They are entered in the upcoming Ironman Muskoka race, which will include a 1,900-metre swim, a 90-kilometre bike ride and a half marathon. Eventually, she says, they would like to progress to a full ironman race.

⁘American Idol⁘ Contestant Claims Show ⁘Stopped Him Transitioning⁘

Zachary Travis has claimed that his treatment on American Idol stopped him transitioning (FOX, @mrkirkcummings/ Instagram)

Queer American Idol contestants have spoken about feeling ⁘manipulated and exploited⁘ by the show, with one even claiming the way he was treated stopped him transitioning, according to Rolling Stone magazine.

Premiering in 2002, the Fox reality TV smash was judged by Simon Cowell , Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, who were famously harsh on the hopeful singers.

Zachary Travis, who creates adult content under the name Kirk Cummings on Just For Fans, as well as working as a DJ and dog groomer, auditioned in 2005 but immediately felt belittled by the judges, particularly Cowell.

Travis wore bell-bottom jeans, a tight white t-shirt and had shaggy blond hair. He sang Whitney Houston's ⁘Queen of the Night⁘, which prompted Cowell to label the audition ⁘confused⁘. It was uploaded to YouTube under the title American Idol Audition Boy or Girl.

Cowell continued to ridicule Travis throughout his audition, branding it ⁘atrocious⁘. Leaving the set, Travis said: ⁘I think it's totally prejudiced to not accept someone because someone's a boy singing girl songs, and that they don't ⁘fit'⁘ I think that's prejudiced.⁘

Babylon Berlin Stars On S4 Of The Epic German Series On MhZ Choice

For U.S. fans of Babylon Berlin the wait is finally over. The epic, ground-breaking German series, a noirish crime drama set during the Weimar Republic, was unceremoniously dropped by Netflix , which had been streaming the show stateside, after three seasons. Season 4 premiered in Europe in late 2022 but American viewers had to wait until specialist streamer MHz Choice finally picked up the show earlier this year. Season 4 launched on Tuesday, June 25.

By season 4, our two leads are in a very different place. The darkness that has begun to engulf the country is seeping into their lives. But they still find time for joy. The show's scenes set in dancehalls and nightclubs ⁘ both Rath and Ritter know how to bop and boogy ⁘ are one of the series' great delights.

Season 4 of Babylon Berlin aired in Germany two years ago and is only just now premiering in the U.S. It must be strange revisiting the show after such a break.

Liv Lisa Fries It's definitely very strange. You'll have to remind me of the plot [of season 4] because it was really a long time ago for me. But I still like talking about it and I think it's cool that it's finally being shown in the U.S.. It was frustrating when it was taken off Netflix there, because so many people saw it there. I'm constantly being asked [by U.S. fans] when the next season was coming, and I was waiting along with everyone else. So I'm happy it's finally being shown again.

Well if I can remind you: Season 4 takes place a year after season 3. It's New Year's Eve, 1930 to 1931. How has the Berlin of the show changed in the interim? And how has that changed your characters: Charlotte Ritter and Gereon Rath ?

Liv Lisa Fries We don't go much into detail on what's happened in between, but you can tell from the costumes and the make-up that we've reached the 1930s. Charlotte is a bit older, her fashion is getting a bit straighter, the cuts of her outfits, the hats, everything. She's become more mature in the best sense, which comes as well from her work as a detective. Things change again in the 4th season, but I'll try not to give too much away. What makes this character so exciting for me is that she really faces existential challenges.

Ring's Inventor Was 'Completely Broke' Before Pitching His $1 Billion Idea To 'Shark Tank' And...

Before doorbell company Ring was acquired by Amazon in a reported $1 billion deal and became a fixture in over 10 million American homes , the company was the tinkering project in the garage of founder and CEO Jamie Siminoff.

A doorbell that could connect to your phone, Ring—originally called Doorbot—was supposed to be cheap to produce, but instead became an undertaking that far exceeded what Siminoff had imagined. 

"It turns out we were way over our skis," he told Fortune at its 2019 Brainstorm Tech conference .

The desire to turn his garage invention into a viable business took him to reality show Shark Tank in 2013. Desperate for funds, he used the company's last $20,000 to build an elaborate set to pitch the product. "I was completely broke when I went on the show," Siminoff said. 

Valuing Doorbot at $7 million and asking for $700,000 for a 10% stake, Siminoff touted the budding company's impressive online sales and a strong mission to make neighborhoods safer through increased surveillance as reasons to take a chance on it.

The fish didn't bite, and Siminoff's appearance on the show would foreshadow the less-than-straightforward path to Ring becoming a blockbuster product. The show's sharks weren't confident in the product's ability to sell, and billionaire investor Mark Cuban believed the company to be worth only $40 million. He would become one of hundreds of investors to say no to Siminoff.

Five years later, after Siminoff announced the deal with Amazon, another shark, Kevin O'Leary, changed his tune on the product, calling it "probably the biggest miss" in the show's history until that point.

‘The Bachelor,' ‘Bachelorette' Producers Admit Past Failures On Race

The team of executive producers from ABC's "The Bachelor" had a lot to celebrate when they appeared at a panel during the Television Critics Assn. winter press tour in February. They were eager to highlight the veteran franchise's winning streak over the last few years.

With its gorgeous exotic locations, charismatic leads and rose-colored romance, the franchise was firing on all cylinders. "It's just about telling true, authentic love stories and hoping that the journey to get there is engaging, entertaining and compelling for the audience," executive producer Claire Freeland said.

"Why does it seem that 'The Bachelor' and 'The Bachelorette' have such a hard time dealing with racial issues in-depth?" asked National Public Radio's television critic Eric Deggans, referencing the fiery controversies surrounding the first two Black leads — Rachel Lindsay and Matt James — that culminated with both personalities bolting from the franchise.

Attempting to shift the focus from the past, Freeland responded, "I can speak to where we are now." But Deggans continued to press: "That doesn't really answer the question. Why has 'The Bachelor' struggled to deal with race, particularly when Black people are the stars of the show?"

Freeland and her colleagues, Bennett Graebner and Jason Ehrlich, froze. After about eight seconds of silence, Deggans quipped, "I guess we have our answer."

The "frozen moment" became one of the buzziest stories out of the press tour, casting another harsh spotlight on the stormy history of racism and cultural insensitivity that has clouded "The Bachelor" franchise — one of TV's most enduring and popular brands — since its 2002 premiere.

It was "the silence that seemed to speak volumes," Deggans later wrote . "... The show's producers have never found a way to grapple with how white-centered the show is, how difficult that centering makes it for people of color who appear on the program and how that failure leaves them unable to respond well when problems involving racial issues arise."

Seeming to fill every corner of the state, Lil Rounds decided to step into the spotlight when she competed during season 8 of American Idol . While gaining praise from the fans and judges, the singer ended her run as a finalist. Although standing on the stage back in 2009, Lil Rounds is looking to bring her own singing competition to Memphis. 

While American Idol travels all across America, looking for a singer who could become the next winner, Lil Rounds wanted to showcase the contestants and the legacy of Memphis. Making the announcement on Wednesday, the signer revealed she would be creating "The 12", which she deemed to be the "ultimate southern vocal competition."

Teaming up with Visible Music College, the new competition will do more than showcase the contestant's talent as it looks to shine a light on the amazing singers in the southern regions. Discussing the idea of the new competition, Lil Rounds said , "We're going to actually train you. We're going to actually coach you. We're going to get you ready for the big lights. And then when you come off that stage, we're going to make sure that you have a path to go on as far as being able to work with industry professionals, network with industry professionals so that we can get you to the next level."

For those who find themselves competing on The 12 , the finalists will compete for three main prizes that will have them paired with industry leaders to help them capitalize on their talents and hopefully further their careers.

Auditions for The 12 will take place on Saturday at the Stax Music Academy. With the competition kicking off, the finalists will find themselves performing at the Orpheum Theater during the grand final on September 26th.

Singer/songwriter Lil Rounds , a finalist during American Idol season eight, announced Wednesday, June 19, 2024, that she is creating ' The 12 ,' which she is billing as the "ultimate southern vocal competition."

Partnering with Memphis's Visible Music College , the contest is meant to help find the best singers and musicians in the southern region and bring them to Memphis to set them up to succeed in the music industry.

The 12 finalists will compete for three grand prizes that pair them with industry professionals to help further their careers.

"We're going to actually train you. We're going to actually coach you. We're going to get you ready for the big lights," Rounds said. The former Bachelor, 31, tells PEOPLE that he is happy about the legal victory as "accountability needed to be had" nine months after an unidentified woman — who has since been named as Laura Owens in recent court filings — claimed he had fathered her unborn twins during a one-night stand.

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Arizona Judge Julia Ann Mata noted Owens "knowingly presented a false claim, knowingly violated a court order compelling disclosure or discovery."

Mata found that "[Owens] acted unreasonably when she initiated litigation without basis or merit. Without an authentic ultrasound, sonogram, physical examination, and in conjunction with a belief she passed tissue in July 2023, the Court finds the underlying Petition premature at best. At worst, however, fraudulent and made to incite communication, a relationship, or both, with the [Echard]."

The former reality star was consequently granted in Petition for Non-Paternity and his attorneys fees.

The court also "determined that Laura Owens has a pattern of similar, if not identical behavior, and court involvement" and referred the matter to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for further review of her actions.

He calls the referral to Maricopa County Attorney's Office for possible criminal charges "the ultimate win for me."

Paul Ivy: I entered the contest because I was proud of these lyrics and thought they might have a chance. I also love the magazine.

PI: When I heard I won, I was stunned. It's exciting to hear you won first place! I was extremely happy for Elizabeth and me!

EE: It's such an honor to have our work recognized. As songwriters, we write so many songs that most folks never hear. Songs are meant to be shared.

PI: The inspiration came from Elizabeth, who brought the title to the write. We wanted to write it for anyone who has ever been abandoned.

EE: We wanted to express the viewpoint of someone affected by someone else's drinking (and ultimately their own). The comparison of pouring rain, tears, and alcohol felt right.

PI: I would say the story is about a grown woman trying to fill the void of her father walking out on the family one stormy night. She knows the incoming storm will awaken her memory of that night, and she tries to ease the pain with alcohol. She knows after the storm passes, she'll be okay, but she just has to get through it.

Should You Track Your Exercise In Steps Or Minutes?

Many people use fitness watches to track their workouts and overall fitness—but is it better to measure your movement in steps or overall minutes of exercise? New research may have the answer.

The findings indicate that what's most important is simply sticking with an exercise routine, rather than tracking movement in one specific way over another, experts said.

Currently, exercise guidelines from the Department of Health and Human Services recommend adults get either 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) or 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly to achieve optimal health benefits.

But this research implies that tracking steps—which has become increasingly popular given the ubiquity of fitness trackers and smartphones—is also a useful metric.

"We recognized a gap in the existing guidelines that focus primarily on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity but lack a clear step-based recommendation," Hamaya told Health. "Our study aimed to explore whether step counts could be as effective as MVPA time in predicting health outcomes."

To compare these two methods of fitness tracking, Hamaya and his team used data from 14,399 people enrolled in the U.S. Women's Health Study, which was a randomized clinical trial that ran from 1992 to 2004.

In February, the 39-year-old "Roar" hitmaker and longtime "American Idol" judge announced that she would be leaving the hit singing competition show after the conclusion of season 22.

On Wednesday, Trainor, 30, appeared on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen" when a fan called in and asked the singer whether she was in talks to replace Perry on the show after judge Luke Bryan and host Ryan Seacrest both said she would be great in the role.

"I've done every interview in the world and said that that is my dream job, and I have emailed three awesome people who work in that world who don't really have the final say," Trainor said. "But I begged."

"I have begged for this job," she continued. "I haven't heard any updates, so check my emails, but that is my dream job. I want to drive to work on 'American Idol' and then drive home."

The Grammy Award winner explained that she was a longtime fan of the show and loved watching the contestants' journeys from their auditions to becoming superstars.

PL: I really have a lot of respect for the recognition that American Songwriter gives to songwriters. For that reason, I've had my eye on American Songwriter for a while now. I released ⁘Tell Him About Me⁘ in the Spring because I felt like it had that sense of a carefree, spring break attitude to it so when I heard about this competition, I thought it was the perfect time to finally submit some of my work and just see what happens.

JS: I'm supporting Preston LeMacks as we wrote this song for his artist project. Very proud of him and excited for his music!

PL: This question immediately brings a smile to my face. When writing this song, I wanted to highlight the scenario of another person playing games with their ex's emotions. The person claims to have moved on but still does everything they can to get their ex's attention. What better way to write about a breakup then to talk about the games that sometimes follow.

JS: Relationships are very complicated. What's even more complicated is when you break up. Seeing the person you were once in a relationship with dating another person can trigger a flood of emotions. This song is about those triggers and the emotions that follow.

Exercising At Night Best For Blood Sugar Control

Experts emphasize that all activity lowers blood sugar and that the best time to exercise is whenever you can fit it in.

The new study shows that it's not just the amount of physical activity, but that timing is also relevant when improving blood sugar control, says coauthor Antonio Clavero Jimeno , a PhD candidate at the Sport and Health University Research Institute at the University of Granada in Spain.

The study included 186 participants with an average age of 46 and an average BMI of 33. Investigators monitored physical activity and glucose patterns over a 14-day period using a wristband activity tracker and a continuous glucose-monitoring device.

Researchers found that getting 50 percent or more of daily moderate to vigorous activity in the evening was associated with lowering day, night, and overall blood glucose levels compared with being inactive, and the link was stronger in people with impaired glucose regulation.

"The results show slightly greater reduction in blood glucose levels if exercise is performed in the late afternoon or evening, but the difference is minimal compared to the mixed and morning exercise [groups]," says Malene Lindholm, PhD , an instructor of cardiovascular medicine and researcher at Stanford University in California, who was not involved in the research.

These findings confirm what Fatima Syed, MD , an internal medicine doctor who specializes in diabetes and weight management at Duke Health in Durham, North Carolina, sees in her practice.

For managing blood sugar levels, exercising in the evening, and particularly after dinner, can improve morning glycemic control, says Dr. Syed.

We Tested The Drop Stop From Shark Tank To Find Out If It's Worth The Hype

Enter Drop Stop , currently a best-selling product on Amazon in the Automotive Seat Cover category. More popularly known for its debut on the TV show "Shark Tank," this car seat gap filler promises to solve all your cleanup worries by making the crack through which random items usually fall through completely non-existent. Priced at $25 at the time of writing, highly rated at 4.6 out of 5 stars with over 66,000 customer reviews, I wondered if this thing warranted all the online praise. With an upcoming five-hour road trip, I knew the perfect time to give it a whirl was now.

To really enhance the veracity of my hands-on testing, I first wanted to create a realistic mental image of what the state of cleanliness our minivan is usually in as well as our level of need for the accessory. All the items I mentioned earlier — including a stray Taco Bell sauce packet that's been there for who knows how long — were things I actually found underneath the driver and passenger seats when I did a pre-road trip cleaning. When I told my husband I would be testing the Drop Stop, he was very excited as he's prone to drop his mobile phone through the seat gap, usually at the most inopportune time when he needs to use Google Maps for directions while in motion. This made the Drop Stop even more promising.

Even though the Drop Stop seemed pretty self-explanatory and easy to situate, I checked to see if it came with a user manual. THE BBC is launching a new "duty of care package" in the wake of Strictly's Giovanni Pernice scandal, The Sun can reveal.

Following a series of crisis meetings , safeguards are being introduced for celebrities and dancers on the show.

Measures include on-call counsellors, cameras to film training , the offer of post-show therapy and the provision of chaperones if requested.

Psychological testing will also be implemented to ensure stars are "robust" enough to cope with the constant media and online scrutiny.

A source said: "Strictly is the jewel in the crown of their schedule, and upwards of ten million people tune in weekly — that's a lot of pressure for everyone involved.

"The BBC is under enormous pressure to ensure this series goes without a hitch. Cameras will be installed pretty much everywhere and a counsellor will be on call 24/7."

Lawyers for the dancer , 33 — who denies any wrongdoing — and several former partners are compiling evidence for a BBC probe.
