American Idol winner Jamal Roberts has been tapped to sing the national anthem before what could arguably be the biggest college football game in recent memory .
Roberts walked onto the national stage during Season 23 of ABC's American Idol , a competition he won last year by a record-setting 26 million votes. Host Ryan Seacrest told PEOPLE magazine it was the "biggest final vote in show history."
A gospel singer and P.E. teacher from Meridian, Mississippi, Roberts' musical career has continued to earn him acclaim and accolades. His debut single, " Heal ," debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Gospel Songs and Gospel Digital Song charts, a news release stated.
Indianapolis concert-goers may have seen Roberts last year when he joined R&B performers Brandy and Monica during The Boy Is Mine tour . He also was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in November for Best Gospel Performance/Song for a live version of the song, "Still" with artist Jonathan McReynolds.
Brianna Therve, a 17-year-old high school junior from Florida, will contribute American Sign Language (ASL) during the performance of "America the Beautiful." A local high school senior, 18-year-old Maria Pernalete, will perform ASL as Roberts sings the national anthem.
Kickoff between IU's Hoosiers and the Miami Hurricanes is scheduled at 7:50 p.m. ET, Monday, Jan. 19.
