'Love Island' Cast, Kylie Jenner And When Cosmetic Treatments Age You

Many people seek out facial fillers and cosmetic procedures to look youthful. But be careful: Dermatologists warn that, if taken too far, they can make you look decades older.

Just take the new season of the United Kingdom version of "Love Island" for example. Photos of the cast recently went viral, as many on the internet declared some of the women − still in their early-to-mid-20s− looked much older.

The photos even baffled a plastic surgeon. In a TikTok with over 13 million views, Dr. Daniel Barrett , a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, had to pick his jaw up off the floor upon finding out the women in the photographs he reviewed were 25, 24, 24 and 26, after guessing they were 38, 42, 35 and 32, respectively.

"Obviously, I don't watch this show − maybe I should − but this is crazy," Barrett says in the video. "Plastic surgery and injectables done incorrectly can make you look older."

Dr. Anthony Rossi , a dermatologist and surgeon, agrees − and says it's not a phenomenon relegated to "Love Island." Thanks to social media and other reality television stars, like the Kardashians, he says, many people believe more is better when it comes to cosmetic treatments.

"One of the most advantageous parts of our human brain is we recognize emotions, we recognize faces, we recognize other human facial structures," Rossi says. "So these cosmetics procedures that people are having done, if they're done too early on such a young face, it starts to mature the face in certain ways."

Dermatologists say cosmetic treatments carry risks and often you can't be sure how a procedure or treatment is going to look until it's done. If a treatment isn't done well − or not done with the patient's unique proportions in mind − it can make them look incongruous and even older, Rossi says.

"It's less about the procedure itself and more about how well it's done and the nuance with which it's done," he says. "That's why I strive to tell my patients we're going to keep a very natural aesthetic."

University Of Wisconsin Alum Jenn Tran

Here's what to know about Jenn Tran, "The Bachelorette" of Season 21 — who also happens to be a University of Wisconsin-Madison alum .

Tran appeared on "The Bachelor" last season, and during the finale, was announced as the next "Bachelorette."

How did she end up on "The Bachelor" in the first place? Did she ever dream she'd become "The Bachelorette"? And, how does it feel to be the show's first Asian American lead?

She was born in New Jersey after her parents and brother immigrated to the United States from Vietnam, Tran shared in  a "Get Ready with Me"-style video  "Bachelor Nation" posted in May in celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Tran hopes to inspire young Asian American girls who are "dealing with the same things" she did as a kid — "having a bit of an identity crisis and not knowing where they fit in" — as well as anyone who has ever felt like they didn't fit in somewhere.

"I never would've dreamed of becoming the role model I once needed when I was a kid," she said. "It's really quite full-circle and surreal."

Tran has been working toward becoming a physician assistant, but is currently taking a "little break" from PA school, which is in south Miami. In the words of her favorite artist Taylor Swift, Tran has "a lot going on at the moment."

"I want to be able to really focus on PA school the best that I can because the end goal is to be a good provider," Tran said. "I'm just pushing it off until I have a lot more time to dedicate to it."

This Writing Contest Is Helping AAPI Youth Explore Their Identities, Fight Racial Injustice *

Tanish Gaglani never thought of himself as a whole person. He felt disconnected from his cultural roots ⁘ a feeling that was only worsened by social isolation when the pandemic hit in 2020 and the years after, when he was just 11 years old.

It wasn⁘t until Gaglani began exploring his deepest feelings through writing that he finally started to reconnect with those lost parts of his identity, an accomplishment underscored by him winning the first place prize from Make Noise Today, a literary arts competition.

Gaglani, now 15 and attending high school in Palo Alto, says that writing has become a powerful tool that allows him to embrace his own roots and reclaim his cultural identity.

The contest was established by Long Beach-based communications company Intertrend in partnership with nonprofit Creative Class Collective in honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month in 2020 ⁘ in hopes of providing AAPI youth with a platform to combat racist rhetoric, explore their identities, and reconnect with their heritage.

Each year, the organization hosts a nationwide callout for high school students to creatively express themselves through prose, performance, and visual arts ⁘ and highlights those works in an annual exhibition.

This year⁘s exhibition, which showcased selected original, first-person nonfiction works from 70 high school students nationwide, kicked off on Thursday, June 13, at the Billie Jean King Main Library with a special theme: ⁘Amplifying Heritage, Empowering Futures,⁘ an exploration of how their heritage has made them who they are today.

⁘We are honored to see such an incredible representation of Asian American youth and we were so moved by their written, performance and graphic expression of cultural appreciation,⁘ Make Noise Today⁘s executive director Michael Vitug said in a press release. ⁘By reflection on what ties them to their cultural roots, these talented students encourage other members of their generation to share their own stories and maintain this rich culture.⁘

5 Ways To Increase Your Happiness Through Exercise

Maybe it was racing your sister and dad to the front door. Or jumping on the bed with friends during a sleepover. Or playing a team sport. Or riding your bike around the park.

But we abandon movement at our own peril and at risk of our well-being. Studies have found that movement — and its more challenging and intentional cousin, exercise — is not only beneficial for physical health but is also closely associated with mental status and mood .

McGonigal said exercise allows for the creation and release of "hope" molecules, technically called myokines , during muscle contractions — for example, when we work out or even just move around. Some of these myokines can have antidepressant effects.
