UTICA — Now in back-to-back seasons, it is Todd Hicks and his Oneida girls tennis team who get to hold up the yellow Section III Champions banner and pose for a photo.

Third-seeded Oneida was the last team standing after defeating the previously unbeaten New Hartford Spartans 5-2 during Friday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B sectional championship at the Parkway Recreation Center in Utica.

Last year’s undefeated Oneida team — led by former players Lauren Skibitski, Molly Moyer, Emily Marshall and current junior Sydney Lusher — defeated Notre Dame 7-0 during the Section III final.

 “After losing five players from last year’s sectional championship team, this young team overcame a lot of pressure and kept the Oneida tradition going," Hicks said.

Belgrade, Billings West girls battle to scoreless draw | Local Sports | belgrade-news.com

Belgrade's Abby Black, right, and Billings West's Jillian Hust battle for the ball Friday afternoon.

* * *

Belgrade's girls posted their second shutout of the season and snapped a three-match losing streak in an Eastern AA clash against Billings West.

The scoreless tie keeps the Panthers (2-5-2) in the hunt for hosting a first round playoff match Oct. 22 at the Belgrade Youth Sports Complex.

Billings Skyview, the defending state champion, is currently atop the conference standings along with Bozeman. The league champion receives a first round bye, while the other top three seeds will host playoff matches.

"The fact that West beat Skyview, but then lost to Great Falls, we just knew that we can be competitive," Bridwell, who is Belgrade's first-year coach, said. "We're learning more and more about this division. Everyone is right there, so this is a great resolve for us. Maybe we could have gotten the win, maybe they could have gotten the win, but we're right in there."
