A small group of parents took their case for bringing girls’ volleyball to the Loyalsock Township School District to the board at their meeting Wednesday.
In a prepared statement, the group requested the board consider adding a middle and high school girls’ volleyball team to the sports schedule for the 2020 fall season.
A group of interested girls has formed an Amateur Athletic Union volleyball club so they can practice. The group at the meeting also requested permission to use district facilities for practicing as the winter months approach.
The parents shared that last year about 35 girls had expressed an interest in participating in a school volleyball team. Their current AAU team has a roster of 17 girls who have been meeting and practicing weekly for about seven weeks! ANACORTES — Some of the Anacortes girls' soccer team's youngest players performed like canny veterans Tuesday in a 2-1 Northwest Conference win over Sedro-Woolley.
Freshmen Camryn Kerr and Emma Foley scored, and freshman Claire Schnavel made several key stops down the stretch as the Seahawks held on for the win against a county opponent.
Kerr scored early on a penalty kick; Foley scored off an assist by Erin Kennedy to break a 1-1 tie.
"When you play flat, disorganized and technically poor, missing three breakaways, you get what you get," Sedro-Woolley coach Gary Warman said. "They had two shots on goal and they both went in."
Seahawks coach Gretchen Hanson said the team also got great play from Tessa Balding and Samantha Dziminowicz.

Mike Bires: Girls soccer thrives at Freedom - Sports - The Times - Beaver, PA
Since football remains the most popular sport in western Pennsylvania, Freedom’s team has understandably created quite a buzz throughout its school district.
The Bulldogs are 7-0 so far this season and 18-2 since the start of the 2018 season. That’s one of the best records in the WPIAL during that span.
But football isn’t the only Freedom sports program excelling at an ultra high level this fall. So, too, is the Bulldogs’ girls soccer team.
Based on the success Freedom has had the previous five seasons, its success this season shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Now in his sixth season as coach, Colin Williams has yet to have a losing season. Williams, who also coaches Freedom’s boys team, has led the girls to six straight playoff appearances and WPIAL championships in 2016 and ’18. Over the past four years, the Bulldogs have gone 77-5-1. That's the most wins among all girls teams in the Beaver County Times' coverage area.
