Former AMERICAN IDOL contestant Clark Beckham pushed back against the idea that marriage has to be difficult.
“When I was engaged and I would tell people I was engaged, for some reason, all anyone wanted to tell me was how difficult marriage was going to be,” he said in a recent Instagram video.
Beckham shared that people would ask him if he was “sure” and told him there would be lots of sacrifices and other issues he and his wife would have to face.
However, after the singer-songwriter got married, he said things were “pretty sweet” and never seemed to get harder.
“[That's] what marriage can be like when you put the other person first over and over and over again,” he wrote in the post's caption. “It's hard, but when a running back scores a touchdown, you never hear him complain about how hard he had to run to get there. It's what he was built for and the reward DRASTICALLY outweighs the effort and sacrifice. Fiancé's! Get excited! It's going to be a blast!”
“I've told her many times that she's the most important thing in the world to me and if she ever needed me while I was on the road, I'd be on a plane back home, no questions asked,” he told PEOPLE of juggling marriage and his career. “I'm committed to having a successful marriage and family more than a successful career. She needs to see that.”
He continued, “Signing with NCS Records is both an honor and a responsibility that I cherish. Not only do I see it as an opportunity to help define what this new chapter for NCS looks like, but they've looked me in the eye and said, ‘We believe in you.' That makes me want to run through a wall. And figuratively, I intend to.”
Beckham's advice for the newly-engaged is a reminder that the benefits of marriage far outweigh any small problems couples might face.
