The Rise and Fall of the Riskiest Asteroid in a Decade – “I’ve Never Seen Such a Risky Object”

For a few tense days this January, a roughly 70-meter asteroid became the riskiest observed in over a decade. Despite the Moon’s attempt to scupper observations, the asteroid is now known to be entirely safe.

Initial observations of an asteroid dubbed ‘2022 AE1’ showed a potential Earth impact on July 4, 2023 – not enough time to attempt deflection and large enough to do real damage to a local area should it strike.

NASA's plans to prevent a potential asteroid impact catastrophe explained

To find the answers to these questions, one has to know what near-Earth objects are out there. To date, NASA has tracked only an estimated 40% of the bigger ones . Surprise asteroids have visited Earth in the past and will undoubtedly do so in the future.

Millions of objects of various sizes orbit the Sun. Near-Earth objects include asteroids and comets whose orbits will bring them within 120 million miles (193 million kilometers) of the Sun.

Amateur Astronomers Team Up to Measure Distance to a Close-passing Asteroid - Sky & Telescope ...

On the afternoon of December 19, 2021, our team of amateur astronomers in two towns in Italy, Cremona and Salerno, observed the close passage of the near-Earth asteroid 163899 (2003 SD220). Our observations enabled us to calculate its distance using the parallax method.

The parallax of an object is its apparent shift based on the angle from which we've viewing it, in the same way that a finger held close to your eyes appears to move depending on whether you're watching it with your left or right eye.

Satellite Spots Massive Asteroid Impact Crater in China

In 2019, researchers first described a 1.15-mile-wide crater in a mountain range in northeast China; late la st year, a NASA satellite imaged the crater from space, giving a broad new view the impact's aftermath.

The southern rim of the crater has eroded , so from above the impact site looks more like a crescent. The rim is nearly 500 feet tall at its highest points, the researchers reported, and is slightly wider than China's previously confirmed impact strucgture , Xiuyan, which is 1.12 miles across.

Tonga volcano eruption yields insights into asteroid impacts on Earth | Space

On Jan. 15, 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano erupted off the coast of Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean, generating a tsunami and triggering resulting wave action alerts around the world. 

The underwater volcanic eruption spewed ash, steam, and gas a radius of over 160 miles (260 kilometers) and more than 12 miles (19 km) into Earth's atmosphere .
