Music at Bedtime Might Not Be a Great Idea

"Our brains continue to process music even when none is playing, including apparently while we are asleep," said study author Michael Scullin, a sleep researcher at Baylor University, in Houston.

The survey included 209 participants. They completed a series of questionnaires on sleep quality, music-listening habits and earworm frequency. Questions include how often they experienced an earworm while trying to fall asleep, when waking in the middle of the night and upon waking in the morning.

The researchers also took EEG readings — records of electrical activity in the brain — to examine physiological markers of sleep-dependent memory consolidation. Memory consolidation is the process by which temporary memories are spontaneously reactivated during sleep and transformed into a more long-term form.

The researchers played three catchy songs, Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off," Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" and Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," randomly assigning participants to listen to the original versions of those songs or instrumental versions of the songs.

The study found that individuals with greater music-listening habits experienced persistent earworms and a decline in sleep quality. These results are contrary to the idea of music as a hypnotic that might help sleep, according to the study.

"Almost everyone thought music improves their sleep, but we found those who listened to more music slept worse," Scullin said in a news release from the Association for Psychological Science. "What was really surprising was that instrumental music led to worse sleep quality — instrumental music leads to about twice as many earworms."

To keep music from having a negative impact on sleep, Scullin recommends first trying to moderate music listening or taking occasional breaks if bothered by earworms. Avoid listening to music before bed.

Another way to get rid of an earworm is to engage in mental activity — fully focusing on a task, problem or activity helps to distract your brain from earworms. Near bedtime, rather than engaging in a demanding activity or something that would disrupt your sleep, like watching TV or playing video games, Scullin suggests spending five to 10 minutes writing out a to-do list and putting thoughts to paper.

Overcoming adversity, artists seek to inspire in new music video | Reuters

Artists from around the world who have overcome adversity have joined forces in a new recording of 1990s song "You Gotta Be".

Deaf British dancer Chris Fonseca and Brazilian musician Johnatha Bastos, who has partially formed arms, are among the 13 contributors to the track, released on Monday.

The music video was recorded as part of the True Colors Festival, which celebrates diversity and inclusion through performing arts events.

"It's increasing visibility, making people see that we are visible and if we get the chance we can do incredible things as well."

Filming the music video online proved a logistical challenge given the artists recorded their parts from different countries.

"When you start recording and you get the bits, it's not so easy to just say, 'hey, come round again on Tuesday and replay your guitar part'," said Dr Sydney Tan, the video's creative and music director.

"We do need a lot of patience. But ... the artists are so patient. We have nothing to complain (about). We're just so happy."

NFTMUSIC.AI aims to change the landscape of the music industry by empowering artists in the industry through their content, and move the musical culture forward as they do so.

Harnessing the power of blockchain technology, they believe that it can improve upon the current limitations of digital music distribution and create an ecosystem that will support musicians in gaining proper compensation for their work.

To conquer these challenges, NFTMUSIC.AI is developing a blockchain-based ecosystem that rewards musicians and streamlines the music licensing process.

Mighty Vibe review: Is this music streaming device worth it?

Music on the go has taken many forms over the past 40 years, ranging from bulky boomboxes to palm-size iPods, and it's still changing.

Today, many people listen to music through smartphones and Bluetooth headphones. While convenient, it's not the most practical option. That's why Mighty decided to roll out the Mighty Vibe, a music player that offers easy listening through offline streaming via Spotify Premium and Amazon Music.

Mighty claims the Mighty Vibe's simple, distraction-free design contributes to a more peaceful, enjoyable listening experience. It plays Spotify and Amazon Music without a phone, screen or internet connection. The Mighty Vibe holds up to 1,000 songs and podcasts and offers 5 hours of playback. The tiny device measures only 1.5 x 1.5 inches and clips onto clothing — a far cry from smartphones that take up entire pockets.

We tested the Mighty Vibe with someone who listens to music while they work out and while they engage in everyday activity. They normally listen to music through Spotify or YouTube via an iPhone. Their preferred headphones are Apple AirPods.

The Mighty Vibe is a small music player that lets users listen to Spotify and Amazon Music without relying on an internet connection. It measures 1.5 by 1.5 inches, weighs a mere 19 grams and clips onto clothing or straps.

It's Bluetooth-compatible and works with most Bluetooth headphones, speakers and car entertainment systems. The Mighty Vibe has a standard audio jack for wired headphones as well.

The Mighty stands out for its pared-down design, a unique feature in a world where many devices feature busy touchscreen interfaces. The Mighty Vibe lacks a screen and instead is equipped with three tactile buttons to navigate settings and scroll through playlists.

Because the Mighty Vibe is geared toward on-the-go listening, it's designed to withstand the rough-and-tumble of high-activity use. It's drop-resistant and has an IPX4 water resistance rating, meaning it can withstand splashes, sweat and light rain exposure.

Once Mighty Vibe is connected to Spotify and Amazon Music, playlists are viewable on the Mighty app. Users have two options to add and sync playlists with Mighty Vibe, in which they can be manually selected or randomized.
