YouTube announces Beauty Festival featuring Selena Gomez and more - ABC News

The online video platform has announced its inaugural YouTube Beauty Festival that's scheduled to premiere May 14.

The virtual festival, hosted by YouTube's head of fashion and beauty, Derek Blasberg , will be summit-style, bringing together everyone from beauty creators to public figures all in the name of beauty.

On Thursday, YouTube announced that Selena Gomez, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ashley Graham would be added to an already impressive lineup of notables.

The platform initially announced that notable creators such as Michelle Phan, Manny MUA and Patrick Starrr as well as celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Paris Hilton and Pharrell Williams would be present for the beauty-filled affair.

After initially imagined as an in-person event in 2020, it was postponed and reimagined as a virtual event for 2021 due to the pandemic.

Presented by YouTube Originals and produced by Studio Sabia, the event celebrates a diverse mix of professional perspectives to enlighten viewers on a variety of industry-specific subjects including a Black Beauty Founder Roundtable segment with YouTube's Head of Beauty Creators Chanel Tyler .

"Viewers can expect to be inspired, energized and maybe even emotionally moved by some of the stories that are being shared," Tyler told People.

"There are so many gems from how to take up space and be a force in an oversaturated market, what it feels like to be one of so few, how to build a strong and engaged community, how to be an ally as a brand and founder, and what having equitable business practices actually means," she said.

Selena Gomez & Mental Health Awareness: A Timeline | Billboard

Selena Gomez attends the photocall for "The Dead Don't Die" during the 72nd annual Cannes Film Festival on May 15, 2019 in Cannes, France.

Selena Gomez  has never shied away from the opportunity to tap the mic and speak up about mental health.

From magazine covers to multiple groundbreaking initiatives, the "Vulnerable" singer uses every stage she can to bring awareness to mental health issues and allocate appropriate resources for different communities while opening up about the personal battles she's faced with anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, Billboard  has compiled 10 pivotal moments when Gomez stressed the importance of mental health awareness.

Timed with 2021 Mental Health Awareness Month, Gomez launched a new Mental Health 101 educational campaign with her mission-driven makeup brand Rare Beauty. The initiative is "dedicated to supporting mental health education and encouraging financial support for more mental health services in educational services," according to her Instagram. One post contained a set of slides that began by listing mental health as its own school subject next to math, science, history and P.E. and contained shocking statistics about mental health, a  petition  calling on the philanthropy community to support mental health services in schools, and a  fundraiser  for the Rare Impact Fund that she launched on her 28th birthday last summer (more on that later).

Serving as the 2020 Teen Vogue Summit keynote speaker, Gomez spoke about the theme of her Billboard 200  No. 1 album Rare , and how it echoes throughout her beliefs in normalizing open conversations about mental health. "The whole theme of my last album was a lot of self-discovery, a lot of being OK, being alone and being vulnerable, being OK with not looking like everything else, not looking like everyone else," Gomez told then- Teen  Vogue  editor-in-chief Lindsay Peoples Wagner, who serves on the Rare Beauty Mental Health Council. "My journey personally has been all about my timing; when I felt like it was working, and that's when I suddenly became so obsessed with making sure that everybody I knew understood that sharing your emotions were great. How I'm a huge advocate for therapy. How I feel like there are support groups for everybody, and it's OK... there's no way that people aren't feeling a certain way, whether they're figuring that out on their own or not, we all need each other."

The singer-actress hopped on a video call with none other than VP Kamala Harris, who was the Democratic candidate at the time, to discuss several issues plaguing the United States, including mental health. "I just read too much about how deep this country is being affected mentally. I've had so many dreams about creating places that people could go to. I think there's a part of me that wishes we had some sort of place that felt like, OK, maybe you just need to get help," Gomez explained.

The Rare Beauty founder found excitement in the Rare Impact Fund and in being able to go to the studio again, which helped ground her. "I would say right now, I'm fully coming out again and I just think I had to handle it the way I needed to handle it, and got through it with the right people and doing the right things and doing the right steps to not make me go crazy."

"It's scaring people and it's circulating on all these different sites and I see these heads of companies not doing anything about it," Selena Gomez said

Detailing that she feels the cause she is supporting "is extremely important," Gomez said, "I want to do my best to use my platform to confront these issues."

"The purpose of me reaching out to people is ... to talk about what I believe is going to need to happen for us to have progress … when it comes to me and when it comes to the connection I have with people in general just people, I'm not afraid — I would rather say something than not say something," Gomez added. The shoes are giving us extreme dominatrix vibes—if these boots could talk, they would say, don't mess with me! A diamanté choker and dainty rings by Messika finished off the look with polish. Those boots, though, are having us rethink our spring footwear choices. Sure, a dainty sandal is always a must, but there's something about the idea of whipping out some thigh-highs this season that just feels right. Gomez knows this: Paired with any outfit, they instantly add attitude. Consider them your closet's feisty new friend!

The Transformation Of Selena Gomez From 10 To 28 Years Old

We've watched Selena Gomez grow up right before our very eyes. After spending a few years on PBS, Gomez got her big break, like so many before her, (ahem, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato ) on Disney Channel , where she starred in "Wizards of Waverly Place," as well as making appearances in other shows and Disney movies.

Then, like those other Disney kids that came before her, Gomez transitioned from acting to singing. From there, she grew her business empire to include producing credits, cooking shows, and clothing lines, and her own "clean" beauty line. Through it all, Gomez has presented a stoic and remarkably professional demeanor for someone who was thrust into the public eye at such a young age. "I say about Jennifer Lopez that she has compound eyes, that of a fly," close friend Ryan Seacrest explained to Business of Fashion in 2019. "She sees everything in 360, everything that's happening in front of her and around her. Selena has that as well. She doesn't miss a beat. That is a very good thing to have when you're in her position."

Here we see Selena Gomez with her co-stars, celebrating the "Wizards of Waverly Place" at around age 15. Gomez's first taste of stardom came in her early childhood when she appeared on "Barney & Friends" when she was around 10 years old. Disney tapped her to move to Los Angeles and work for the network, eventually landing the lead in the "Wizards of Waverly Place" in 2007, per Insider .

What ushered in this new grown-up attitude? According to Gomez, she fell in love with, you guessed it, Justin Bieber.

Most importantly, though, Gomez and The Weeknd had a relationship based on friendship first. "I'm lucky because he's more of a best friend than anything else," she said.

And yet, it wasn't meant to be. The bulk of The Weeknd's 2018 EP is widely considered to be about his split from Gomez. "[The EP] was just like this cathartic piece of art. And yeah, it was short because that's all I had to say on this situation," he said to Esquire in 2018.

Gomez appeared to handle the situation better than her ex. "We ended it as best friends, and it was genuinely about encouraging and caring [for each other], and that was pretty remarkable for me," she told Billboard in 2018.

Gomez's health deteriorated to the point that she needed a kidney transplant. "I'm very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer," Gomez wrote in a September 2017 Instagram caption. "I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health."

Gomez thanked her friends, family, and team of doctors for their support during the physically and emotionally difficult time. Mostly, though, Gomez wanted to thank her friend, fellow actor Francia Raisa, who donated a kidney for Gomez's surgery. "There aren't words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa," she wrote. "She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much, sis."

Selena Gomez’s Makeup Perfectly Matched Her Red Carpet Dress | StyleCaster

Vanngo used Rare Beauty products, of course, though he hasn't dropped exactly which ones yet. (Don't worry—we'll guess.) We're drooling over the smoky cat-eye in warm tones. And that nude lip? Perfection. Gomez's new blonde hair was pulled back with natural-looking pieces falling to the front of her face. You can thank hairstylist Marissa Marino for the pretty look that allows the makeup (and that choker!) to stand out.

Manicurist Tom Bachik gave Gomez those cool black-and-white nails. He also did Jennifer Lopez's nails for the show. Unsurprisingly, she also looked incredible.

Be sure to tune in Saturday, May 8 on ABC, CBS, FOX, iHeartMedia, YouTube and more, to see Gomez and J.Lo and all the celebs in action for a great cause.
