Willow Smith Releases Pop-Punk New Song with Travis Barker
The 20-year-old daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, who performs under the name WILLOW, dropped a new track today that fully embraces the alt-rock and pop-punk sound. Complete with her own guitar playing and a head-banging chorus, the new release, titled "Transparent Soul" (stylized as "t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l") marks a departure from her ethereal, R&B repertoire and proves that Willow does, indeed, have the range. She even tapped Travis Barker as a feature.
“I am so grateful for this tune because it was created in such an introspective time (during the first couple months of quarantine),” she said in a statement. “It was the song that proved to me that I needed to let go of the insecurities I had about making a project of this genre.”
The edgy track is the first taste of Willow’s upcoming album, which is set to arrive this summer. She was influenced by the emo and rock acts she listened to growing up, like Avril Lavigne, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, and Fall Out Boy. Most importantly, she looked to her mom, who fronted her own nu metal band, Wicked Wisdom, in the early 2000s.
Willow Smith Comes Out as Polyamorous — and Reveals ‘Only’ Reason She’d Get
Smith, 20, practices polyamory , which means she's open with her partners about her other relationships, but isn't monogamous to just one.
"With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that's what everyone around you says is 'the right thing to do,'" Smith told her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith and grandmother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, during Wednesday's episode on Facebook Watch .
"In my friend group, I'm the only polyamorous person and I have the least sex out of all my friends," Smith said.
The youngest child of Pinkett Smith and Will Smith also shared her views on marriage and infidelity as the main reason for many divorces.
"The history of marriage really irks me, just the history of marriage as a whole and what it has represented over the years for women in particular," she said.
While she wouldn't rule out marriage in the future, Smith said she definitely needs a reason greater than, "I think you're cute."
"I feel like the only way that I would get married is, let's say me and my partner or partners wants to help people and we need to put our finances together to make that vision happen," she said. "That's the only way I could see myself getting married."
Yvette Young designed the eye-popping artwork for Willow Smith's out-of-this-world St.
When Willow Smith released her latest pop-punk inspired track Transparent Soul , those who watched the accompanying music video would have noticed two things: the significant sonic shift that single represented, and Smith's unique St. Vincent signature model, which boasted a planetary paint job.
Well, as it turns out, the guitar's artwork was designed by none other than electric guitar hero and fingerstyle tapping ninja Yvette Young, who picked up the paint brushes for her latest artistic collaboration.
Based on the original Ernie Ball Music Man St. Vincent signature , Smith's new six-string comes equipped with a solar system-inspired artwork, complete with planets, moons, and a smattering of star constellations.
Revealing the news on social media, Ernie Ball said, “@OfficialWillow's Ernie Ball Music Man @st_vincent guitar is out of this world! Artist collaboration with @yvetteyoung.”

Of her latest collaboration, the multi-talented guitar slayer/art phenom said, “So honored I got to paint this for her. Willow Smith has a track out with Travis Barker and it's a banger! Stuck in my head already.”
It's not the first time Yvette Young has offered up her visual artistic vision for a custom guitar body paint job, having previously created an equally interstellar artwork for an axe as part of her own guitar customization service.
The rapidly rising star also has a long history with guitar customization, having released a sticker pack last year that she hoped would “encourage everyone to have a lil fun and personalize their guitars a bit”.
Of her newfound affinity for the guitar, Smith said, “I personally feel it's just really important to play an instrument if you're going to have a career in music. Songwriting is 15 million times easier when you can actually write the songs.”
Willow Smith releases pop-punk single featuring Blink 182's Travis Barker | Louder
Produced by Tyler Cole, Smith's co-star in The Anxiety, Transparent Soul is the first track to be released from her forthcoming fifth album, which is set for release in summer 2021 via Roc Nation. Featuring scathing lyrics such as "All your little fake friends will sell your secrets for some cash” and "I knew a boy just like you, He's a snake, just like you, Such a fake, just like you” it's quite a departure for the 20-year-old singer.
The new single is accompanied by a video filled with perspective manipulation reminiscent of the early '90s, directed by Dana Trippe . Trippe has previously worked with artists such as Demi Lovato, Kesha and Haim.
Smith, who also plays guitar on the song explains: "I am so grateful for this tune because it was created in such an introspective time (during the first couple months of quarantine). It was the song that proved to me that I needed to let go of the insecurities I had about making a project of this genre.”
Willow Smith tells her mother and grandmother why she is polyamorous
Smith, daughter of Hollywood star Will Smith, made the announcement in the latest episode of Red Table Talk, which she hosts alongside her mother and grandmother.
She told Jada Pinkett Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris she enjoyed the freedom allowed by polyamory.
Smith, 20, said: "With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that's what everyone around you says is the right thing to do.
"Also, doing research into polyamory, the main reasons why monogamous relationships, or why marriage, why divorces happen, is infidelity."
Smith's grandmother, Banfield-Norris, 67, said to her polyamory "feels like it's really all just centred around sex".
Smith, known for songs including Whip My Hair and Wait A Minute!, said it can help couples who have different desires.
She said: "Are you gonna be the person to say, you know, 'just because I don't have these needs, you can't have them either?'
"And so that's kind of one of the reasons why I actually was interested in poly because I was introduced to it through kind of a non-sexual lens. In my friend group, I'm the only polyamorous person, and I have the least sex out of all of my friends."
Pinkett Smith, 49, said she "totally" understood her daughter's stance. Last year she admitted an "entanglement" with rapper August Alsina while married to Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air star husband Will.
