How to Wash Your Clothes With Lingerie Bags

Mesh lingerie bags protect their contents from snagging, stretching, and generally getting beat up in the washing machine—but despite the name, they're not just for lingerie. When used correctly, mesh bags will keep a wide variety of delicate clothing in tip-top shape for years to come. Here's how to use them.

Hooks, buttons, zippers, and other fasteners can easily snag on other clothes during a wash cycle—even from inside a mesh bag. Always close them up before washing so they can't cause any damage. If there are an annoying number of fasteners to deal with, just close a few so the packet stays flat in the wash.

The biggest downside to lingerie bags is that they're easy to overfill, which prevents the garments from getting properly cleaned and rinsed. Most bags are designed to hold a single item that's about the same size and shape as the bag itself. You can get away with putting multiple smaller items (think socks and underwear) in one bag as long as they can move around easily—but when in doubt, err on the side of under-filling.

I tend to use them for anything that needs to air dry , mainly as a signal to myself to grab it out of the load as it heads to the dryer. Since I use dryer sheets (yes, I know), this also includes any microfiber or performance fabrics.

Passaic County prepares to buy former lingerie factory in Paterson

PATERSON — Forty-five years after county officials first agreed to lease space in a lingerie factory at 495 River Road, they are preparing a bid to buy it.

Passaic County Commissioners this week introduced a $20 million bond ordinance designed to cover acquisition costs and subsequent capital improvements for the gray-block warehouse that stretches down River Road.

Anthony DeNova, the county administrator, said the county will pay $18 million for the 4.6-acre property and warehouse. Another $2 million will be set aside for renovations "that we have held off making because it hasn't been in our best interest," DeNova said.

Currently home to the county's purchasing department, superintendent of elections and superintendent of schools, the structure was originally home to the Barbizon Corporation, which made women's garments there from the late 1940s through the mid-1970s.

Starting in 1976, county officials approved a lease of a portion of the building to house its welfare department. The only dissenting vote came from Edward O'Byrne. Then the county commission director, O'Byrne said the county would save money in the long run by buying a downtown office building outright.

Auctioned in a tax sale in 1984, the site was bought and expanded soon after by current owner Bascom Food Products. It has also been used recently as a distribution warehouse and as a storage area for county voting machines and other items.

Passaic County through its lease obtained the first right of refusal to purchase, DeNova said. The deal will see the county use $11 million in cash and borrow another $9 million, he added. The county currently has about $85 million in cash reserves, records show.

The property on River Avenue is assessed at more than $8 million for the 2021 tax year. In 2020, it was responsible for roughly $335,532 in property taxes. If purchased by the county, it will become tax-exempt.

Lingerie Line Luxxie Boston Is Making Sustainability Sexy

Once the prototype was ready, Mnayarji beta tested it on over 300 women. "If you met me in the year 2013 and 2014, I made you try this on and wear it every day for a week," she says. "From my mother to all my sisters, my cousins, my friends, people that I would literally have five-minute conversations with while waiting in line, I had them test it. It was important to me that we got women in all different sizes, so that's why we were able to offer sizes 32 to 42. And it was important for me to get a comfortable fit as well. Comfort is so important. For all of human existence, women have compromised comfort to look good. It's time that we change that; this is absolutely ridiculous. Never settle for discomfort. I always said this is a distraction—imagine what we could do if we weren't thinking about what's pinching us and pulling us and squeezing us in different directions."

The feedback Mnayarji received from her testers helped her evolve the design. The biggest challenge, in addition to accommodating so many different body types, was designing a slip that worked for a range of styles. "We focus on women in traditional industries that have to wear business casual to business formal," Mnayarji says. "Traditionally, that's a knee length dress or a button-down shirt, but we have become more casual, and especially now, we are super casual. We also wanted this to be something that you would want to go from power nap to power suit, so you can also wear it comfortably on the weekends and for leisure."

To this day, Luxxie Boston remains exclusively direct to consumer through their website, which helps them keep their pricing down. The entire line is manufactured in the United States, in Los Angeles. "We're paying our manufacturers a fair wage and that is not cheap, so our margins are very slim to start off with," Mnayarji says. "We would rather pass on a savings to our customer. And we wouldn't be able to price it as competitively if we were to go through more traditional retailers. We also have a more personal experience with our customer because we want to interact with them." Being direct to consumer enables them to communicate with customers directly about their feedback. It also gives Luxxie Boston greater control over their product and how it's presented to the customer.

Luxxie Boston considers every aspect of their environmental impact, which is why they minimize their use of plastic. Instead, they opt for recycled paper and cardboard boxes. Since their silk is machine washable, that saves on dry cleaning, which is another detriment to the environment. "The fashion industry in general is the second largest polluter, so we didn't want to be a contributor to that," Mnayarji says. "Our tagline is heirloom, not landfill. We want to give you something that's well crafted, that is sturdy enough that maybe you will pass it down to your own grandchildren. Imagine having your grandmother's awesome silk robe?"

Like many lingerie lines these days, Luxxie Boston is meant to be seen. For example, the cami shouldn't always be hidden underneath a button-down shirt; it can also be styled with a blazer. "I've worn the black maxi to black tie events," Mnayarji says. "I've also worn it out for dinner with friends." Eventually, she'd like to expand the collection and hopes to put out a boy short next. Just like the rest of the line, the new additions are sure to be classics that are made to last. Trends will come and go, but Luxxie Boston knows that careful craftsmanship and sustainability are always in style.

Mystery joyride: Judges side with man who got tickets & tolls, found lingerie in Jeep after

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) – More than a year after Victor Oddo says he discovered his Jeep went on a joyride when it was supposed to be in a repair shop, he feels he got justice – in court.

After a Better Call Behnken investigation in February 2020 , the state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services launched its own investigation. An administrative hearing judge sided with the state.

The state judge recommended Jeff Arthur, the owner of Mustang, Speed & Restoration, be fined $4,000. In addition, a judge in civil court in Pinellas County ordered Arthur to pay Oddo a total of $909.90 for the tickets, car cleaning, mileage and court cost. He was also ordered to pay another $3,325 for Oddo’s attorney fees.

“It wasn’t about the money,” Oddo said. “It was about the principal.”

Here’s the backstory: Oddo says he dropped off the Jeep on Jan. 15, 2020 because the engine light was on. Text messages between him and the owner document three weeks of slow progress before he finally picked up the Jeep on Feb. 6. He claims it's still not fully repaired.

Then came parking tickets in the mail. On Saturday, Jan. 18 at 12:58 a.m., somebody got a $40 ticket at Ben T. Davis Beach in Tampa. Then, at 5:11 p.m. the same day, someone got a $30 ticket for an expired meter in Clearwater.

On Jan. 23, the following Thursday when it was still in the repair shop's custody, there were two SunPass charges on the Sunshine Skyway bridge. One was going north at 10:58 a.m. and one was going south at 12:24 p.m.

Oddo claims that while he was cleaning up the car after he picked it up, he found sand and stains in the backseat along with clothing tags and a pink, lacy thong in the back under the passenger seat.

Christopher Kubacki, Oddo’s attorney, had this to say about the civil case: “It’s about making people accountable for their actions, for the wrong they do.”

'Beate' Review: Bad Habits - The New York Times

In "Beate," ("Blessed") lingerie factory workers and an order of nuns team up against a treacherous businesswoman threatening to outsource their jobs and remodel the convent into a hotel resort. It's an intriguingly outlandish formula for a potentially empowering tale of female collaboration. Unfortunately, this half-baked comedy from Italy dozes off at the wheel.

Spunky single mother Armida (Donatella Finocchiaro) rallies her crew of seamstresses into starting their own lingerie company when their employer abruptly gives them the boot via text message. Covertly using the factory's equipment, they eventually hit the jackpot by designing luxury garments adorned with scraps of beaded embroidery procured from the nunnery.

The director Samad Zarmadili cobbles together this underdog story like a slapdash sitcom episode. We're supposed to be tickled at the notion of foul-mouthed working women laboring alongside brides of Christ (assembling racy intimates, no less!), but the film remains yawningly polite and prudish. The sole provocateur is Armida's lover (Paolo Pierobon), a second-rate harlequin who winkingly delivers salacious sales pitches to potential buyers.

At best "Beate" is a curious artifact that vaguely nods at the history of Italian fashion manufacturing, the country's Catholic heritage, and the human consequences of rampant privatization. But maybe that's giving it too much credit.

Beate
Not rated. In Italian, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 35 minutes. Watch through virtual cinemas.
