This week in the best new pop music saw a number of album announcements. Troye Sivan teamed up with Tate McRae for a sparkling tune, Bebe Rexha made an emotional return, and Julia Michaels officially announced her debut single with a vulnerable track.
Following up on his 2020 EP In A Dream , Troye Sivan teamed up with Tate McRae for the effervescent synth-heavy number “You.” Over cascading keys, the two singers harmonize about having difficulty moving on from a past relationship.
Julia Michaels may have started her career as a songwriter for other artists, but with her new track “Love Is Weird,” Michaels officially announces her debut album Not In Chronological Order . For Michaels, the LP follows her journey from heartbreak to new love. “I'm not bitter about love anymore,” she said about the album. “I know what functional love is like and being in love and being hesitant about that love because it feels so perfect.”
Ingrid Michaelson tapped ex-One Direction member Zayn for “To Begin Again,” a love letter to the resilience of New York City dwellers. In a statement about the track, Michaelson said she originally penned the track the night Joe Biden won the election and it felt like everyone around her was rejoicing: “I wrote 'To Begin Again' the night that Biden won,” Michaelson said. “There was so much joy in my neighborhood. Pots and pans being banged out of windows. Horns and whistles. Clapping. Singing! The collective sigh of relief resonated with me in such a way that I had to get it out musically.”
Another album announcement arrived this week, this time from Marina . The singer had previously teased her upcoming LP Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land with an empowering single and now, Marina shared the charged track “Purge The Poison,” which warns against the impending affects of climate change.
Following her 2020 debut EP Medicine , Baby Queen has been expanding on her anti-pop sound with a handful of singles this year, “Dover Beach” now being her latest. “It’s about being infatuated with somebody and seeing them everywhere you look,” Baby Queen said about the track. “I was kind of pissed that I went to look at the beach, all I could think about was this person, hence the lyric “you stole the view of Dover Beach.” It’s another internal struggle with my own insecurities and a sort of acceptance of the fact that I can’t escape my daydreams of this person, even if I go to a different place.”
After making a name for himself through a handful of EPs, Cautious Clay officially announced his debut album Deadpan Love with the bouncy single “Karma & Friends.” " Deadpan Love explores the ways I cope with the worst of what humanity has to offer," Clay said in a statement. "It's about opposites—having an outer layer that's tougher, this ‘deadpan’ state, and an inner layer of compassion, where you're open to being there for the people you care about. It's this warring compassion and cynicism that has empowered me to express myself through this medium.”

16-year-old French artist Angelus was early to join the server in 2017, and has since seen their career surge in streaming numbers and follower counts thanks to their unique style of glitched-out rap across tracks like "Revenge" and "Hope U Doing Well." "We were really not taking ourselves seriously as artists back when we all met; we were just making music because we were bored," they say. "But then we started gaining a bunch of fans and followers out of nowhere and things have just kept going since then."
Both Kuru and 17-year-old Stef (co-founder of Novagang), who are of Asian American and African American descent respectively, note how POC-dominant the scene is. It's a sentiment shared by 16-year-old newcomer Juno , who began turning heads in November with the release of his single "Karma" , a distortion-heavy pop cut that quickly gained traction on Discord and Twitter. His emo vocals paired with the abrasive beat serve as a perfect encapsulation of his mid-late 2000s alt-influences.
"I don't think it's an overstatement to say that this is a group of artists who are changing pop music as we speak," Juno says, reflecting on digicore's story so far. "When I used to look at this scene from an outside perspective, it really seemed like a community that anyone could be accepted and welcomed into. That possibility creates this parasocial relationship between the fans and artists, where the community kinda just functions as one on social media."
But despite its inherent DIY nature, digicore artists certainly aren't opposed to the idea of major label interest and embracing a more traditional way of navigating the industry. While glaive has been signed to Interscope Records, ericdoa's latest album, COA , came accompanied by an impressive music video for lead single "2008 ", and it's likely that more artists will follow suit. Both their fans and peers are excited to see their once-niche community finally gain attention from the music industry. "With how serious things are getting for everyone in the scene, it's really awesome that we still have places like Discord and Minecraft to just chill," said Dalton.
"This entire thing is crazy to me because we're really all just kids in our rooms making the music we want to make," ericdoa adds. "We were finally given the chance to express the art we make as a community on a huge platform, and that's so amazing to think about, because it's still just the beginning."

Yet Prince was also devoted to the concise pleasures — and to the market-exciting potential — of a hit single. ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and it was originally started by the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation , and culminates with a worldwide celebration of jazz the last day of April.
Jazz is often called “America’s music,” as it’s one of the first musical styles created in America. It came from a blending African music and European musical tradition: taking the syncopated rhythms and “blues” scales from African music, and the instrumentation and song forms from Europe.
“Jazz really has become, in a way it’s a lot like, visual art is,” said Bryan Bricco, the director of the Penfield High School Jazz Ensemble. “Jazz to the listener is going to take on a different meaning, from each person to each person, just the way a painting is going to effect each person differently.”
“ Herbie Hancock , Charlie Parker , John Coltrane ,” Bricco said. “They’re the kind of artists get rediscovered with every generation.
“ Snarky Puppy being an example,” Lucas said. “Is really captured a whole new generation of listeners; they brought them to the music of jazz, through their constant touring, as well as their really being an advocate for the music and social media.”
But what is most amazing about the swinging sonnets of jazz, is that the intersectionality of its origins, are still sound proud.
“You might listen to hip hop music. You might listen to your country music, contemporary pop music,” Bricco said. “That all is informed by some of the things that were happening in the early jazz music that stemmed from the twenties and thirties.”
“And jazz is all about that. Making people feel happiness and joy, and oftentimes even back in the forties or fifties where people would not come together from different backgrounds would for jazz. And that still happens today,” Lucas said.

Jim Steinman, songwriter for Meat Loaf and Celine Dion, dead at 73
Steinman’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” and other songs made up the bulk of Meat Loaf’s 1977 blockbuster record “Bat Out of Hell,” which went on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time. The pair continued to work closely for volumes II — which 1993’s “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” came out of — and III of the rock music series.
Their karaoke mainstay “Total Eclipse of the Heart” helped launch Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler to legendary status in 1983.
The enigmatic songwriter was known for drawing inspiration from the arts. His song “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” most famously performed by French-Canadian icon Dion in 1996, was said to be inspired by Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights.” Critics hailed Dion’s recording as a “highlight” of her English-language music career, undoubtedly paving the way for her global, decade-spanning success.
Steinman later received his first and only Grammy in 1997 for writing on Dion’s album “Falling Into You.”
In 2004, a stroke left Steinman temporarily unable to speak, and he spent years relearning to use his voice , according to a speech he delivered at Amherst College in 2013.

Windsor resident Wendy has a carer look after her from care company Home Instead Windsor, Runnymede and West Spelthorne.
The former actress was forced to shield during the Covid-19 pandemic so her granddaughter Flora set her up with an Amazon Alexa voice activated speaker to help give her a source of entertainment whilst stuck inside.
The 101-year-old resident struggles with fiddly buttons on TV remotes, phones and the radio and depended on her caregivers to help her with these devises.
But they are not there round the clock to help her use the devises, which would often leave Wendy frustrated.
With the help from her care company, Wendy has mastered the Amazon Alexa so she can now play radio stations, listen to news updates and contact her family without having to struggle with small buttons.
Wendy's daughter Heather said: "The new technology has really helped her throughout lockdown periods, allowing her to easily listen to the radio or the news. She can even play games with it, helping keep her mind active.
"At 101, mastering this new technology has been a real learning curve and its great that her caregivers have been able to help her.”
She often uses the smart speaker to listen to her favourite musician Charlie Kunz, a pianist from the early 20th century.
However, Amazon Alexa often mistakes Wendy's command for pop music from artist Charlie Puth - but luckily she has become fond of his music too.
