The Marine On St. Croix native is no stranger to the spotlight. In 2017, she was the first woman with Down syndrome to compete in the Miss Minnesota USA Pageant. She is setting her sights on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue because she says the magazine has always showcased how diverse beauty can be.

Olivia said, "He was so nice, so talented, so hard-working. I remember just thinking, 'Wow, he's so nice, he's so kind,' and I've always known him from afar, and it was great to meet him and work with him. He was genuinely a lovely person, just had great energy. He will be missed, absolutely."

Marquita Pring, who grew up in the Oneida County village of Clinton, posed in several bikinis for the magazine's upcoming 2021 Swimsuit edition alongside big names like Lais Ribeiro, Kate Bock, Josephine Skriver, Danielle Herrington, and former Miss Minnesota USA Haley Kalil. It's Pring's second time appearing in the annual publication after making her rookie debut last year.
"Marquita is a natural fit for our brand," editor MJ Day said in a statement . "She is effortless to photograph, and a pleasure to be around. She is smart, competent, established and possesses a hunger and dedication to changing the industry. Her voice is powerful, and it is an important one for the world to hear. She represents so many different types of women and we are incredibly lucky to be a part of her story."

"What an incredible honor it is to be in such an inclusive and beautiful magazine that has pushed the envelope since day 1," Nu said while thanking her agents and the team working for the magazine. "I'm so proud to be making history as the first Asian curve Sports Illustrated model."
In a video posted the same day, Nu said being featured in the magazine's upcoming swimsuit issue is important to her and others who look like her.

"My heart is with the Asian community right now," she said in her post. "There's not much to say to ease the pain, but all we can do is stick together and continue to fight the fight."

Valentina Sampaio is making magazine history by being the first openly trans model in Sports Illustrated ’s annual swimsuit issue.
Sampaio made the announcement on her Instagram, revealing she would be featured as a 2020 rookie in the upcoming issue.
“I am excited and honored to be part of the iconic Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The team at SI has created yet another groundbreaking issue by bringing together a diverse set of multitalented, beautiful women in a creative and dignified way,” she wrote.
