Generally, the year after a new wave of consoles is a year of slowly realized potential, as new games are released for said new consoles — while not leaving the prior generation of hardware entirely in the dust. Of course, 2021 has its own unique circumstances complicating the math of game development — like in every other entertainment industry, the global pandemic pushed back many planned 2020 releases and left the 2021 calendar in disarray.
As such, nothing here is set in stone — expect announced dates and platforms to change as the year goes on — but we did try to limit this list to games that are highly likely to come out this year. All told? It'll be a promising year in video games.
Not to change the topic here:
US consumers spent record amounts on video games in 2020, NPD reports - The Verge
Spending on video games set a new record of $56.9 billion in 2020 in the US, according to a new NPD Group report , a 27 percent increase compared to 2019. Spending on hardware hit its highest level since 2011 at $5.3 billion, a 35 percent increase compared to 2019. NPD classifies video game spending as money spent at retail and digital storefronts on "video game hardware, content, and accessories."
Although last year saw the release of the PS5 and new Xbox consoles, it was Nintendo's Switch that took the crown as the bestselling platform over the course of the year. It was number one in terms of both dollar sales and units sold. The PS5 was the second bestselling console in terms of dollar sales, while the PS4 was in second place in terms of units sold.
Video Games With Fake Glitches To Trick Players | Screen Rant
There's few things as aggravating as bugs in video games, which can wipe away a player's hard-earned progress or make certain segments of their game downright impossible to complete (as early players of Cyberpunk 2077 can attest). Games like Batman: Arkham Asylum , on the other hand, use the frustrating nature of glitches to their advantage by using "fake" video game glitches to trick players, mess with their expectations, and inspire them to think outside the box.
Voltage Video Games in Manlius to close at the end of the month | WSYR
MANLIUS, N.Y. (WSYR-TV)– Gamers in Manlius are sad to hear that another local business is closing up shop at the end of the month.
Voltage Video Games has been a one stop shop for all things gaming since 2014, and now owner, Mike Saltzman is having to close it down.

Saltzman said the decision came down to a lack of staffing for this secondary location as public transportation is in issue for his employees. The pandemic also posed a unique difficulty in getting shipments from their distributors onto the shelves.

Are Videogames the Future of Remote Work? - WSJ
When I arrive at the office of IDE Corp. , a 28-person company that provides consulting and professional development to teachers and school administrators, founder Nancy Sulla greets me warmly, then takes me on a tour, introducing me to her employees as we go.
Working on a couch in the lounge area, Executive Vice President Tanya Bosco is discussing new kinds of curricula with one of her direct reports, while a German shepherd rests at her feet. Nearby, at their desks, a handful of employees appear hard at work. In a conference room, we drop in on a business-development meeting that includes a half-dozen employees sharing documents with one another around a long table.
Video game spending increased 27% in 2020 – TechCrunch
If you've been following the gaming space — or just the state of the world, generally — over the past 12 months, this shouldn't come as a major surprise. Spending saw big increases pretty much across the board in 2020 as a homebound populace sought comfort and distraction in gaming. This comes in stark contrast to much of the rest of the consumer electronics space, in which economic uncertainty curtailed purchasing on non-essentials.
According to the latest figures from NPD, spending on gaming hardware, software and accessories was up 25% in December and 27% for the full year. Hardware specifically increased 38% year-over-year for December to $1.35 billion, with the arrival of next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft.
If You Prefer Single-Player Video Games, You're Not Alone | CBR
According to a recent Sony data leak , gamers spend more time playing games offline than multiplayer. This may be somewhat shocking since the industry tends to fixate on online multiplayer games rather than story-driven narratives.

The emergence of loot boxes and microtransactions made multiplayer games more lucrative , driving many video game companies away from single-player experiences. Although microtransactions exist in single-player games, they aren't as prevalent as they are in multiplayer titles. Despite the industry's attempts to steer gamers in a more online multiplayer direction, single-player games continue to thrive as they enter the ninth console generation.
