'When we play, everyone dances!' Benin girl group Star Feminine Band | Pop and rock | The Guardian
A girl band in Benin is by its very nature political. Since its post-independence 1960s heyday, local orchestras have been a central fixture of the Beninese music scene, with the most famous of them all, the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, serving as Kidjo's own launchpad. But women, if they were involved at all, were only ever singers and dancers. "People don't like girls to play instruments here," Balaguemon says.
Undeterred, he spent the first two weeks teaching them to clap to the beat. He taught them discipline, too: if you couldn't be punctual, you were struck off the team. They now practise three school evenings a week and on Sundays, plus every day from nine to five during the holidays. Are rehearsals difficult, I ask 13-year-old Grâce Marina. "They're fantastic!" she replies with a grin.
Ripon Sports Recap (Dec.
Lucy Beuthin searches for a teammate to pass the ball to. She finished with a game- and career-high 17 points.
The Ripon High School Tiger girls' basketball team won tonight for the third time in its last four games, defeating the Wautoma Hornets 56-45 at home in non-conference action.
The three wins, which came in its first eight games, match its win total from all of last season, when it went 3-23 overall.
The teams traded baskets for the first seven minutes, with Wautoma (2-8 overall) holding onto a 9-7 lead. That was when the Tigers (3-5 overall) went on a 16-2 run, which included an 11-0 stretch to begin it.

It's easy to see how that elevator pitch came about. "Bridgerton," inspired by Seattle-based author Julia Quinn's historical romance novels, has the requisite array of British types fussing over social customs, advantageous marriages and status. The series, which takes place in early 1800s London, is narrated by an unseen insider (Julie Andrews provides the deliciously plummy voiceover), whose gossipy reports about high-society scandals the characters read with rapt attention.

"We got out to a real quick start and that helped propel us," Cedar Falls coach Gregg Groen said. "We did a great job of shooting from the field early on and from beyond the three-point line. I felt a lot of kids stepped up tonight and hit some big shots for us."
'Boys Vs. Girls': Film Review | Hollywood Reporter
A likably low-rent, low-ambition entry into a genre whose standard-bearer, Meatballs , doesn't set the bar very high, Mike Stasko's Boys Vs. Girls goes to summer camp for its promised battle of the sexes.
You'd think this would be welcome news at least for the older teens employed every year as counselors. Instead, these kids are as cootie-scared as their charges (who are little-seen here). Taking cues from respective leaders Dale (Eric Osborne) and Amber (Rachel Dagenais) — who were almost a couple back in high school, until Dale fumbled while flirting and made an enemy of Amber — each group decides to make the other miserable.
Quapaw High survives hot start by Caney Valley and grabs close win
"This was a game where I felt like we competed really well against a much bigger, much more experienced team," veteran Caney Valley Lady Trojan head coach Deric Longan said about last Friday's home game. "Quapaw is really a good team. Even being undersized, our girls really competed early."
Caney Valley burst to a 13-10 lead in the first quarter — but scored just 19 more points in the final three quarters.
"Early on, we knocked down some shots that got us the lead and some momentum," Longan said. "In the second quarter, their size took over. They outrebounded us and scored a lot of points in the paint."
