Americans of all ages are spending more on video games | VentureBeat

We know that time and money spent on video games is surging due to the pandemic. Now, industry-tracking firm The NPD Group is providing detail on where that growth is coming from. And it turns out that people across all age demographics are playing more games more often. That's big for mobile games, but it also includes Nintendo , PlayStation , and Xbox .

In its "2020 Evolution of Entertainment" report, NPD found that 4-out-of-5 consumers in the U.S. played a game in the last six months. More important for the industry, those consumers are spending 26% more time and 33% more money on games than the same period in the previous year.

Mercer County Library Blog: Dennis, Of West Windsor, Reflects On Video Games | Lawrenceville, NJ

Game design has also grown, evolved, and broadened during this time. Chess and some sports have been around from the beginning; space combat games, too. While there's not much you can change with a chess video game aside from graphics and difficulty, other genres that started as simple squares moving across your screen have progressed to figures close to indistinguishable from actual players.

Lastly, video games can be a social activity. At first we would take turns, or play against one opponent. Then consoles could accommodate 4 players, and the TV screen would be cut into quarters, each person getting their own "mini-screen" so to speak (now picture that on the smaller TVs of 20 years ago!). Computer users would create networks and have LAN parties with folks bringing their computers out.

How wrestling invaded video games - Polygon

When I was 10 years old, I got a copy of WCW /NWO Revenge for my N64. I didn't watch wrestling, but the game was fun. I popped into the editor, put a dude in flesh colored trunks and renamed him NAKEDMAN. Friends would come over and tell me who their favorite guys were and I'd nod politely. My dad and I would turn off pinfalls, DQs, time limits, and count-outs and just beat the heck out of each other with bats and chairs until our avatars were exhausted and covered in blood.

As gaming becomes a culture touchstone, advertisers toggle in

Branded characters. One-off events. Programmatic ads. Marketers are finding more ways to get their brands into games — big picture, gaming has gone mainstream. And while still somewhat under the radar for brand marketers, it’s becoming one of the largest and fastest-growing forms of media for the young, affluent, ad averse people they’re keen to reach.

Not even the coronavirus crisis has been able to slow gaming's growth. In fact, the games industry has thrived at a time when other entertainment mediums have floundered. Gaming sales in the U.S. in August rose 37% compared to the previous year to $3.3 billion, per market research firm NPD Group. That was the fifth straight month of huge jumps in sales compared to the same periods in 2019.

How AI judges video games by their covers - The Hindu

Researchers used both image-based and text-based models for generating genres of the video games.   | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement

The cover of a video game might not always be enough for gamers to know what the game is about. A pair of researchers seem to have developed a solution.

The duo used a multi-modal deep learning framework to train an artificial intelligence (AI) system to judge a video game by analysing its cover.
