November is the season for blockbuster video games — not even the pandemic has changed that. In fact, the video game industry has seen record spending and profits in 2020 . Academics, video game makers team up in rare collaboration

LONDON (AP) — A study by Oxford University researchers on how playing video games affects mental health used data from video game makers, marking what the authors say is a rare collaboration between academics and the game industry.

Lack of transparency from game makers has long been an issue for scientists hoping to better understand player behaviors.

The findings are based on survey responses from people over 18 who played two games, Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Video games help people detach from the problems going on in the real world, according to Dakoda Emberlin, the vice president of communication and marketing for the University of New Mexico's esports team.

"It's a lot of escapism," Emberlin said. "Whenever you play a video game, you're not playing yourself. I'm not playing Dakoda in a video game."
