The continuing COVID-19 pandemic has proven disastrous for many sectors, yet the video game industry is continuing to boom. The quarantine has given many of us the chance to play more video games, particularly when some of us are now “working” from home.
Following the lockdown, US consumer spending on video games reached a second-quarter (from April to June) high of $11.6 billion, an increase of 30 percent from the previous year. In April alone, the increases were 73 percent for games, 163 percent for hardware, and 46 percent for accessories. These changes are particularly notable as spending often declines before the launch of a new generation of consoles, which both Microsoft and Sony are planning this month.

It's more than video games: YHS forms esports squad
The popularity of competitive video game playing, more commonly known as esports, has surged across the world in recent years, and it's no different in Siskiyou County. Last year, Yreka High School became the first school in the county to form an esports squad.
Esports basically turns video game playing into a sport. In some scenarios, it's on an individual level, but mostly it's through teams. It's something that many people don't know much about - especially the older generation, said YHS junior Brayden Rice.
Video gaming on the rise during COVID-19 pandemic - Chicago Tribune
Like many Illinoisans who rediscovered their hobbies during a statewide shutdown earlier this year, attorney Sara Frabotta turned to video games to pass the time as her work slowed down.
The 37-year-old said she bought "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" earlier this year and hasn't stopped playing since.
"A bunch of friends and I play it. We can visit each other's islands and trade stuff. I think the interactive part makes it fun," said Frabotta, of Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood.

The following is a list of the best video games made in the past seven years. Only games released for either Xbox One or PS4, not including rereleases or remasters, were considered.
You can say what you want about the current iterations of NBA 2K , but there's no denying that the 2K series was the best sports video game for nearly a decade. It was and is, to this day, the best basketball game ever made—and 2K17 was without a doubt the best one in the series. There was a run from 2K10 to 2K17 when the gameplay continued to improve each year, paving the way for an extremely realistic experience.

PlayStation 5 Review: Is the PS5 Worth Getting?
The PlayStation 5 has no addition as forward-thinking as the Share button. Its bets are all hedged on premiums: a controller with haptic feedback capable of remarkable subtlety, immersive "3D audio," and the promise of top-flight games that fully leverage the system's robust hardware. Despite all its power and prestige, the PlayStation 5 — which will arrive here in the U.S.
However, the ways in which the PlayStation 5 will carry this vision forward remain largely intangible, if only because the console is launching with a lack of exclusive games that can really show off what it can do. (There are any number of reasons for this muted launch lineup, up to and including the pandemic.) I've played one of the new titles so far: Astro's Playroom , a free game that comes with the PS5. The $60 video game dates back to at least the 1990s. Rarely has a game exceeded that price threshold in the three decades since, even as inflation drove the dollar's value to nearly half of what it was in the days of the Super Nintendo.
This week, video game publishers will press ahead with an industry-wide effort to raise the standard price to $70. The move coincides with the debut of two new game consoles from Microsoft Corp. and Sony Corp., a generational change that comes every seven years or so. There's one complicating factor: an economic crisis that had doubled unemployment in the U.S. from levels before the coronavirus pandemic.
