Sales of video games have surged this year, as both adults and kids stuck at home turn to gaming to stay entertained and connect with friends.
During the second quarter, between April and June, total consumer spending on video games in the U.S. hit a record $11.6 billion, research firm NPD Group reports, up 30% from last year.
"During the pandemic, many have turned to video games not only to keep them preoccupied, but also to stay in touch with family and friends," NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said.

Tony Hawk on how fans made 'Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2' a video game reality - CBSSports.com
Those that played video games in the late 1990s and early 2000s know how special the "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" franchise was. Gamers across the country played the 'Tony Hawk' games, and, outside of the video game world, they had a massive impact on the popularity of skateboarding in general. Fast forward 21 years later, and the franchise is once again at the front of the gaming world.
How'd this manage to happen over two decades after the release of the first game? The passion of the fans, according to Tony Hawk.
Survey: Video games help children become more literate, improve mental well-being | WRAL TechWire
Parents have long debated the impact of video games on children’s minds. Now, a new survey suggests that playing may actually improve their literacy, communication skills and overall mental well-being.
National Literacy Trust interviewed 4,626 people between the ages of 11 and 16 from across the UK for the video games survey. The interviews were conducted between November and December 2019.
More than a third (35.3%) of the children who play said they believe video games make them better readers — with the vast majority (79.4%) saying they read materials related to gaming once a month. The materials included in-game communications, reviews and books.
Outside/In: Depicting the Natural World in Video Games | New Hampshire Public Radio
The open world environment of Skyrim is beautiful, and one of the most celebrated video game landscapes of all time. But an imagined world can be transformative ... and contain ideas about nature that are quite real.

The world of Skyrim is vast. The open world video game contains cities, villages, and rugged wilderness: high waterfalls cascading into deep pools, packs of wolves roaming the edges of misty alpine forests, echoes in the canyons. The fifth installment of the Elder Scrolls series from Bethesda Game Studios, Skyrim is celebrated for the intricacy of its environment, and is one of the top-selling video games of all time.

Selling nostalgia: Retro gaming store opens in Macon, Georgia
MACON, Ga. — Thousands of Americans have old video game consoles and equipment collecting dust on bookshelves or in attics. Heirlooms of the past, for some, but, for Macon's Aaron Gray, his future.
For the past eight years, Gray has collected and sold vintage video games while working as a warehouse manager. The video game finds eventually began to outgrow his garage and, earlier this year, he decided to start his own small business.
"I started collecting and kind of keeping one of everything," Gray said. "I just kind of knew eventually it would be cool to open up a retro video game store."
