‘Mortal Shell’ sets a new standard for ‘Souls-like’ games | Video Game

There have been plenty of games that are modeled after the hugely influential "Dark Souls" series in recent years. "Mortal Shell" is the first one of these "Souls-like" games that I've played that really captured the essence of the "Souls" games while also carving out its own identity.

One of the game's unique mechanics is hardening. At any time, the player can turn their body into a stone-like material that halts most enemy attacks and recover stamina to get ready to dish out more damage. Mastering hardening is key to getting through the game. Since there aren't any shields, hardening is one of your only tools for defense, but it's also useful in extending your combos to get max damage output.

Virtual skylines: Student re-creates Indianapolis and Bloomington through video game: News at IU:

When Indiana cities shut down due to the pandemic earlier this year, an Indiana University Bloomington student found a different way to experience his favorite cities through a virtual game.

Matthew Harrison, a junior from Carmel studying interior design in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design , spent his quarantine virtually creating downtown Indianapolis and Bloomington using the building simulation video game, "Cities: Skylines."

"I have since finished Indianapolis as well as Bloomington and have moved up north to the Gary-Chicago area," he said.

The Los Angeles Lakers planned to get together Wednesday night to watch basketball, which is about all they've been able to do lately.

For now, their competition comes from video games. Their superstar player is also adept at those, as coach Frank Vogel revealed when asked what he's learned about LeBron James that surprised him most.

"I would say how good he is at Madden football," Vogel said. "I think they've been playing a lot of Madden football, our group has, and I hear he's very good."

At the Currier, the under-traveled intersection of video games and art - The Boston Globe

MANCHESTER, N.H. — The slow digital bleed of Tabor Robak's "Twisted Scribe" greets you at the entry of "Open World: Video Games and Contemporary Art," the expansive, exhaustive exhibition of video game culture at the Currier Museum in New Hampshire. A vertical screen glows with a cascading pulse of fuchsia, then azure, then silver. It's a cyberpunk version of Abstract Expressionism, pulsing with visual verve. It's also not even remotely what awaits, just a few steps inside.

How to Pick the Right Video-Game Console This Fall

When it comes to great new video games, fall used to be a safe bet: It's when the biggest blockbuster games were released in the hopes of capturing holiday-shopping dollars. However, like everything else, the video-game world is different now. The struggles of a pandemic economy and remote work have severely impacted game development — few games projected for a fall release have committed to a firm release date, and many have been delayed.

It is, however, once again time for a new generation of video-game consoles : namely, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. If you don't know where to start or are simply new to gaming, that's okay — video games are often impenetrable, and they don't always make sense. Here's what you need to know about the latest set, along with some tips for cutting through the noise and figuring out what really matters.
