Coronavirus education: Millions of girls at risk of leaving school because of pandemic shutdowns

She was 13 when the Ebola virus struck her country, shuttering schools across Sierra Leone. The closures lasted nine months, but Mari Kalokoh could not return to the classroom for years.

The previous epidemic in West Africa forced more girls than boys to halt their studies in the ensuing years, from 2014 to 2016, researchers say, dimming economic prospects for a generation of young women. Educators fear the coronavirus pandemic could trigger another wave of dropouts.

China moves vast trade fair online, but few buyers follow | The Seattle Times

BEIJING (AP) — Standing in front of shelves laden with colorful backpacks, a saleswoman promoted bags on the Canton Trade Fair's website without knowing whether anyone was watching as the world's biggest sales event opened in cyberspace to avoid the coronavirus pandemic.

The twice-a-year fair usually draws more than 180,000 foreign buyers and 60,000 Chinese vendors to the southern city of Guangzhou. But with most foreign visitors barred from China, the event has transformed itself into an e-commerce platform with mini-shopping channels for nearly 8,000 vendors.

Every year, several songs performed either entirely or partially in Korean make their way to the Hot 100, but these are still early days when it comes to artists from the Asian country charting hits in the United States, so it's not uncommon for a group or solo musician to make history in a number of ways with just one new placement, especially if it reaches the upper half of the ranking.

Dowling Catholic's Caitlin Clark named 2019-20 All-Iowa Girls' Athlete of the Year

He and his wife, Anne, were teaching their eldest son, Blake, who was around 6 or 7 at the time, how to ride his bike.

* * *

"She just goes and grabs her bike and starts zipping around on it at the age of 4," Clark said with a laugh. "I think she just has a natural, God-given talent in terms of athletics."

Clark was the type of player who drew a crowd wherever she went. Home and road games, alike, were packed with Iowans wanting to see Clark show off her rare skills.
