These video game subscriptions will help get you through quarantine

SAN ANTONIO – Like a lot of people, Molly Davis has been stuck at home for weeks. For a little entertainment, she logs on to video games.

If you have an Apple computer, an iPhone, or Apple TV, you can check out Apple Arcade for $5 a month. Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass is another option if you want to play big-name games like Halo on your PC.

Then there's Google Stadia. You can play it on a smartphone or tablet, or on a big-screen TV if you have a Chromecast Ultra streaming device with a controller.

NFL's new Madden deal is about more than games

The Madden deal will reap an estimated $1.6 billion for the league and players, but really, unless you stand to get a check, who cares about that? The way this benefits the rest of us — and our kids — is that through EA, the NFL is working to attract younger and younger fans.

The NFL has seen what's happened to baseball, which didn't adjust to changing times and now faces an uphill battle capturing the youth market. At the same time, the NBA has created an entire virtual basketball league, and NASCAR leaped headlong into iRacing during the coronavirus lockdown. There are legions of fans of esports who play video game versions of sports quite happily without ever watching the "real" version. (Or without knowing who the "Madden" guy is in the title, for that matter.

Video game look? Spanish league considering virtual crowds | WANE

MADRID (AP) — Spanish soccer matches could have the look of a video game when the competition resumes next month.

The league is contemplating adding virtual crowds to the television broadcast of matches that will be played in empty stadiums because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Spanish league president Javier Tebas said Friday the league is working with the possibility of giving fans an option to watch the original feed from the empty stadiums or an alternative one with crowds superimposed on the stands, similar to those in video games.

PHT remembers hockey video games: "NHL Hitz 2003" still delivers

The polygonal graphics may not be crisp anymore, but that gameplay still is. Every match is 3-on-3, and it perfectly replicates the excitement of today's NHL overtime. Oversized players zip around on undersized ice. The passing is tape-to-tape. There are odd-man rushes. You will see breakaways. All game long.

You ride this tense line all game: You have the speed to be five seconds from scoring at any time. If you can't dodge the other team, you'll get knocked down before you can fire even a weak wrist shot.

Multifunctional e-glasses monitor health, protect eyes, control video games -- ScienceDaily

Fitness tracker bracelets and watches provide useful information, such as step count and heart rate, but they usually can't provide more detailed data about the wearer's health. Now, researchers reporting in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces have developed smart electronic glasses (e-glasses) that not only monitor a person's brain waves and body movements, but also can function as sunglasses and allow users to control a video game with eye motions.

Devices that measure electrical signals from the brain (electroencephalogram; EEG) or eyes (electrooculogram; EOG) can help diagnose conditions like epilepsy and sleep disorders, as well as control computers in human-machine interfaces. But obtaining these measurements requires a steady physical contact between skin and sensor, which is difficult with rigid devices.

What Gives Video Games The Edge Over Video For Distance Learning? | MarketScale

Videos are a popular choice for visual learning in home and classrooms all over the world. It's easy to see why. They convey ideas similarly to a teacher delivering a lecture, and they can offer plenty of visual examples to bring ideas home. Students can pause or rewind a video if they're having trouble following something. Hopefully, since someone went to the trouble of recording them, they're a little more polished and of better quality than simply recording a lecture.

Well-designed educational video games, while integrating many of the same learning concepts as videos, offers a fundamentally different approach to learning. The many advantages include active engagement rather than passive watching, informative feedback as the player progresses, and best of all, a safe space to fail and try again, which is central to the learning process.
