Coronavirus Means Bigger Gaming Sales, but Less Production - The New York Times

During the early days of self-quarantine at Larian Studios, the independent video game developer founded in Ghent, Belgium, morale remained high. Designers and engineers, many of whom worked remotely (the company has 300 employees across five countries), were able to continue to do so, building levels and writing code from their homes.

"The very first week, it went really well," said Swen Vincke, the chief executive at Larian, which makes popular role-playing games like Divinity: Original Sin and the upcoming Baldur's Gate 3. "Everyone had all the information they needed to just smoothly go work from home."

If You Want to Play Classic Video Games, Buy These Consoles - InsideHook

But for a large segment of the population — those who don't have the newest consoles, have no idea what "Twitch" is, haven't picked up a physical game in years or don't care that new iterations of Animal Crossing , Call of Duty and Doom all broke sales records upon release — everything's a little hazy.

Maybe you remember PlayStation in college. Or NES. Or for the real old people (hello, me), getting your first Atari (and realizing Combat is both the first game you probably ever played and the worst game ever).

GameStop deal: Buy a console, get 5 pre-owned video games for $50

The average person's video game library is worth a small fortune, considering the fact that titles typically sell for $60 apiece. It's been that way since forever, no matter what kind of system you play on, thanks to some semi-complicated manufacturer logic that essentially boils down to consumer expectation .

* * *

We're talking games like The Last of Us , Grand Theft Auto V, God of War, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and Far Cry 5 — cult-favorite, critically acclaimed titles that hold up incredibly even several years post-release. So long as a pre-owned copy is listed at $19.99 or less on GameStop's website, it counts as part of the five-for-$50 bundle.

Fake sports interviews with yourself after video games or activities are a real thing; and have

The times are such that not so long ago I used a random number generator to simulate the 2020 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament that never was and posted the results to Twitter .

Anyhow, in this pretend tournament, the latest episode of Duke villainy came when they defeated top seed Dayton -- those plucky topplers of assumptions -- in the Final Four. Seeing a lamentable blueblood take down a mid-major enjoying a once-in-a-century season and deprive them of a spot in the title game reduced me to a toddler in high dudgeon. So in my imagination, I replaced Dayton head coach Anthony Grant at the podium for the post-game presser.
