If games were once confined to home consoles and PCs, increasingly the interactive medium is one that is shaping everything from our television shows to our theme parks. Here, we reflect on 10 ways games impacted entertainment in 2019, be it via the stories they told, where they told them or how they told them.

"Pokémon Go" in 2016 became a cultural phenomenon, showing millions the joy of "Pokémon" and the magic-like abilities of augmented reality, which can merge digital universes with our own. It's been fits and starts since then for AR gaming, but that started to change in 2019.

WNY developer set to release video game on Xbox

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — When you sit down to talk video games with Colby Breidenstein, you get transported.

"I have it so even when you die, you level up a certain degree. So, the next time you play, you're a little more powerful, even though you're starting over again," explained Breidenstein.

Right now, you can play the game on your computer, but the game itself is about to reach a major check point.
On January 17th, it launches on Xbox One. For $10 you can play all you want.

Many of us will be familiar with the freemium business model: free but restricted access to games that are often simple, or "casual" as they are sometimes known . A minority of players pay for things like speeding up their progression, altering a character's appearance or often just to remove adverts; while the majority just play for free.

Penn & Teller's unreleased video game became a cult sensation

What it's about: In 1987, magician duo Penn & Teller produced a direct-to-video release called Cruel Tricks For Dear Friends , which showed viewers how to use magic tricks, which all involved on-screen material provided on the video, to prank their friends. Having conquered the VHS-based prank market, the duo attempted to move on to video games. Smoke And Mirrors was a series of minigames intended to prank the friends of whoever bought the game.

Strangest fact: This never-released game has a fan base. In 2005, someone managed to circulate an old review copy of the game on the internet, and people have been playing it ever since. Like Cruel Tricks , the games are largely fake games designed to trick the friends of whoever bought Smoke And Mirrors . In "What's Your Sign," Penn & Teller correctly guess the player's sign and then birthday based on a series of seemingly unrelated questions.
