Sweden Charges Ex-Ambassador to China Over Secret Meetings - The New York Times

Sweden's former ambassador to China has been charged with "arbitrariness during negotiations with a foreign power," after she held what Swedish prosecutors said on Monday were unauthorized meetings with two men representing Chinese state interests.

The announcement of the charges was the latest twist in a four-year-old case, in which a Swedish citizen was spirited to China from Thailand, the ambassador held what the authorities say were secret meetings in a Stockholm hotel, and ties between China and Sweden have been strained.

Australian PM defends secret "national security" trials - World Socialist Web Site

Prime Minister Scott Morrison last week publicly supported the holding of criminal trials in total secrecy if they allegedly involve "national security information"—that is, any information about the undercover activities of Australia's military and intelligence agencies.

Asked by a journalist at a media conference if he thought it appropriate to have a "permanently secret legal proceeding in Australia in 2019," Morrison replied in the affirmative. He specifically backed the government's use of the National Security Information (Criminal and Civil Proceedings) Act (NSI Act) against an ex-intelligence officer known only as "Witness J."

PAR condemns secret Senate leadership ballot

The Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana is claiming the state Senate's secret leadership nomination process is unconstitutional.

PAR President Robert Travis Scott issued a statement this morning condemning the Senate's 4-year-old rule that allows the legislative body to nominate its leadership through a secret ballot process. The actual vote to elect one of the nominated leaders is public.

The Senate will elect a new leader in January. PAR called on legislators to suspend or eliminate Senate Rule 3.1.1, claiming it violates the state constitution and the Open Meetings Law as a type of proxy voting or secret balloting that is expressly prohibited.

Five secret corners of Umbria that tourists haven't discovered

Twenty years ago much of Umbria was unknown to all but the most ardent Italophiles. A small, landlocked region, it was overshadowed by its larger neighbour, Tuscany , which drew the visitors and the plaudits.

So now the towns are deservedly well known: Assisi, thronged with pilgrims on the trail of St Francis; Spoleto, a lure year-round but especially during its world-class summer festival; Perugia, the regional capital, big, busy and served by low-cost airlines; Orvieto and its peerless cathedral, a way station for visitors between Rome and Florence; and Todi and Città di Castello, two increasingly chic targets for those on villa holidays in the surrounding hills.

The history Motorola's original Razr, the phone of the millennium

This is the first installment in The Design of Y2K , a series telling the stories behind the most influential products of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“I’ll be honest, and this is a funny story to tell. Initially in design, we didn’t want the chin.”

Today, Paul Pierce is a distinguished designer at Motorola. But 15 years ago, he was on the original design team of the Razr—the impossibly thin phone that would go on to change everything—and he wasn’t so sure about how it was shaping up. Specifically, he wasn’t sure about that big chin.
