Video game addiction is now being recognized—what happens next? - MIT Technology Review

Like millions of kids in the 1980s, Scott Jennings played video games. Sometimes he'd play a little too much, filling up an afternoon with short bouts of Pac-Man or Space Invaders. He grew out of his childhood hobby when he went to college and didn't play for another 10 years. After graduation he landed a job as a software developer and was doing pretty well.

But his drinking started spiraling out of control. When he began to drink in the morning, it scared him so much that he found help. He entered Alcoholics Anonymous and got sober.

No Players Online review: like playing original Quake alone on a haunted server - The Verge

It can be difficult to find time to finish a video game, especially if you only have a few hours a week to play. In our biweekly column Short Play we suggest video games that can be started and finished in a weekend.

In the early days of online multiplayer gaming, there wasn't the now-ubiquitous matchmaking that automatically connects you with other players. Instead, in games like the original Quake , Unreal Tournament , or Counter-Strike , you would be presented with a list of servers; some of those might be empty, requiring you to wait around inside an empty level for someone else to show up. No Players Online turns this moment into the perfect fodder for a creepy interactive short story.

'Minecraft' with Nvidia ray tracing: Here's what it's like to play

It's hardly the sort of game you'd expect to be in need of some realism, given the success it's enjoyed with its basic look. But developer Mojang — which Microsoft bought in 2014 — and chipmaker Nvidia think it could play an important role in the game's future.

That's why they've partnered up to bring out an update for PC gamers with Nvidia's RTX graphics cards, which would make lighting and reflections in the world of blocks look much more realistic.

This may worth something:

The Women Behind Your Favorite Video Games

While one would hope the gaming industry includes a diverse workforce as varied as the characters and worlds we see on the screen, that's often not the case. In fact, according to Statista , less than 21 percent of people employed in the gaming industry identify as female.

To learn more about the unique challenges of being a woman in a largely male field, we spoke with some of the talented women working behind the scenes on your favorite games.

Not at all. I have seen characters such as Ellie in The Last of Us and Clementine in The Walking Dead , who could be good role models for younger girls. There is also Lara Croft, whose physical portrayal has progressed massively! I remember the day I went into the computer store for a copy of Catz for the PC and bumped into Lara's mannequin and nearly had both eyes taken out.

Donald Trump Jr Says His Dad Gave Away His Video Game to Michael Jackson

Donald Trump Jr. said his father gave away one of his favorite video games to The King of Pop when the president's eldest son was growing up.

Trump Jr. recounted the experience as mostly positive, but said he was devastated when his father gave away a copy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the icon.

"So this is sort of a cool story," Trump Jr. said. "Michael Jackson used to come up and he was our neighbor at Trump Tower.

"So I was playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Michael Jackson! You know, this is in the early 90s—maybe even in the late 80s. Peak Michael.
