EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (Reuters) - NASA, most prominent for its many Florida-launched exploits into space, showcased an early version of its first all-electric experimental aircraft, the X-57 “Maxwell,” on Friday at its lesser-known aeronautics lab in the California desert.
Adapted from a Italian-made Tecnam P2006T twin-engine propeller plane, the X-57 has been under development since 2015 and remains at least a year away from its first test flight in the skies over Edward Air Force Base.

Teach Your Kids About the Mercury Transit of 2019 with This NASA Guide | Space
Mercury will fly across the sun (from Earth's perspective) on Monday, and NASA has a whole lot of kids' materials ready for the occasion.
The agency urges educators, parents and guardians not to miss the opportunity to do real-time science with kids, since the next transit won't occur until 2032.
If the weather is good outside and if you have the proper equipment, you can take the kids out to show them the transit "in person." Make sure that any binoculars or telescopes you use have proper solar filters on them, and never look at the sun with your unprotected eyes. Here's NASA's list of proper safety equipment to enjoy the experience safely.
NASA subjected its new Mars rover to harsh Mars-like environs
NASA's latest car-sized, six-wheeled Mars rover, currently dubbed the 2020 Rover, is in the final stages of testing before launching to the red desert planet.
On Thursday, NASA released footage showing researchers transferring the rover into a vacuum testing chamber at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. There, NASA subjected the rover to a simulation of Mars' frigid atmospheric conditions to ensure the rover's antennas, ground-penetrating radar, cameras, and equipment work under such extreme, extraterrestrial environs.

This is how colossal NASA's new Hubble Space Telescope successor is
In a cavernous Los Angeles County cleanroom, Northrop Grumman and NASA engineers have pieced together the space agency's prized next-generation telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope.

How big? NASA tweeted a picture of a human standing on a crane beside the behemoth cosmic-sleuthing satellite, for reference.
(Human for scale.)
This photo showcases just how big #NASAWebb is! We'll be sharing more behind-the-scenes images captured during the integration of the spacecraft and telescope halves of the observatory in this thread.

NASA Installs Final RS-25 Space Shuttle Engine on SLS Core - ExtremeTech
NASA is heading back to the moon, and it’s planning to use the long-delayed Space Launch System ( SLS ) to get there. The agency is working to assemble the first SLS rocket, which will be the most powerful in the world upon completion. Some of that power will come from four RS-25 engines on the core stage. If they look familiar, that’s because the RS-25 has a storied history in NASA’s Space Shuttle program, having first debuted in the 1970s.
The SLS will be NASA’s new super heavy-lift launch vehicle, the first it has had since the Saturn V program ended. Unlike SpaceX’s Falcon 9 and Starship platforms, the SLS is an expendable spacecraft. That means NASA needs a new rocket for each launch — only the Orion crew module will return to Earth for refurbishment and reuse. There are reports that each SLS launch could cost $2B, if not more.
The NASA women who inspired 'Hidden Figures' will get Congressional gold medals - CNN
(CNN) Four African American women known as the "Hidden Figures" who worked at NASA during the Space Race are being awarded Congressional Gold Medals, the highest civilian award in the US.
Today, the #HiddenFigures Congressional Gold Medal Act was signed into law. Congressional gold medals will go to Katherine Johnson and Dr. Christine Darden (and Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson posthumously).
