Japanese technology catapulted the entire country into an economic boom in the 1980s, and its PC scene was right at the center of it. Unlike the NES or the Walkman, Japanese PCs were never huge internationally, which is why there are so many largely unknown but fascinating Japanese PC games from the '80s and '90s that now need to be preserved before they're lost forever .
"There are many, many different magazines. Too much, I would say. Almost one magazine for each system," Redon told me as he showed off a wall of packed floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, which hold only a small part of what the Game Preservation Society has in storage. "In the organization we have a game book collector who has 24,000 books. He also has magazines. So, I think books and magazines, something around 28,000."

The wonderful world of Chinese hi-fi - The Verge
When most people need a new pair of earbuds, they're picking from a pretty small set of brands, usually chosen from Amazon or, worse, the Apple Store. Then there are the outliers, the ones who haunt forums like Head-Fi, who speak knowledgeably about balanced armature versus dynamic drivers, who test their equipment and produce frequency charts.
Online, the phenomenon is known as "Chi-fi" — a mashup of "Chinese" and "high-fidelity." It's usually used to refer to portable audio gear — they're almost always earbuds, which sit outside the ear canal like AirPods, or in-ear monitors (IEMs), which have squishy tips and actually go inside the ear canal — that come from essentially anonymous Chinese companies.

What colonies and shoulder-season sightings tell us about Alaska's little brown bats - Anchorage
Wow, do Alaskans love bats! Last week's column on little brown bats inspired three times the comments I usually get.
People rang in with bat sightings from Nikiski to North Pole; a few offered up their secret spots to scientists who might want to study bats.
Mama bats, now hanging out there in some unknown chilly space, are storing the sperm they received during mating swarms a few weeks ago. If things go well this winter, the females will emerge next spring with a tiny fetus growing within them. They have only one pup each summer.
Enjoyment of pop music classics linked to combination of uncertainty and surprise | EurekAlert!
Why is it that people find songs such as James Taylor's "Country Roads," UB40's "Red, Red Wine," or The Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" so irresistibly enjoyable? In a study reported in the journal Current Biology on November 7, researchers analyze 80,000 chords in 745 classic U.S. Billboard pop songs--including those three--and find that musical pleasure comes from the right combination of uncertainty and surprise.
"It is fascinating that humans can derive pleasure from a piece of music just by how sounds are ordered over time," says Vincent Cheung of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Germany. "Songs that we find pleasant are likely those which strike a good balance between knowing what is going to happen next and surprising us with something we did not expect.
Idina Menzel Reveals the First Song She Sang with Kristen Bell Before 'Frozen'
Idina Menzel was a Broadway sensation long before she played Elsa in Frozen . It was her rendition of the film's most famous song Let It Go that made it a classic though. Fans are just waiting to hear what Menzel gets to sing in Frozen 2 , or maybe they've already heard early releases of Into the Unknown . Before the original Frozen , Menzel had a test with her animated sister Kristen Bell, who plays Anna in the films.
They sang a song together before any of the Frozen songs were written. Menzel, Bell, songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez and co-director Jennifer Lee were at a Frozen 2 press conference on Saturday, November 8 sharing the story. Frozen 2 is in theaters November 22.
