Black Friday: The best video game deals for 2019

We can drop the formality of "Happy Holidays" here, because we'll just go ahead and name the holiday that Americans are really looking forward to: Black Friday.

OK, I jest. Sure, it's a materialistic tradition that results in long lines, groggy parents and messy store floors (please be kind to your neighborhood retail workers, folks). But we can't lie: Black Friday is also a pretty good time to buy video games. Whether you're shopping for yourself or a loved one, there are plenty of options available this year.

Were you following this:

Google Stadia wants to be the future of gaming. So do Microsoft, Sony and Amazon - CNET

And then there were four. Google Stadia, the tech titan's new service that lets you play video games like you stream the TV show Stranger Things from Netflix, launched this week with high hopes -- and immediately took flak for having few features , a poor lineup of games and slow response time . Next year, it'll have another issue to contend with: competition.

That's because 2020 will mark the beginning of a new generation of video games, powered by Sony's forthcoming PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's next Xbox , both of which are planned for release in the fall. They won't be alone.

The Two River Times | Video Gaming Sport Teaches Teamwork at Knollwood School

FAIR HAVEN – Knollwood students on the FH Knights Esports team are part of what organizers say is the first academic middle school esports team in the country.

The sport oftentimes attracts children who might not want to play traditional sports, said Chris Aviles, a Knollwood teacher and esports leader at the school and across the nation. Any student interested can join the team, even if he or she has little to no experience with video games.

"That's why the jersey is so important to me, so they can feel like a family," Aviles said of the team's blue jerseys with blue camouflage pattern sleeves. "I always say that the best thing that happened last year is they all went out to get a slice of pizza together after the game. Maybe a lot of them were just gaming in their room by themselves, but a lot of these guys now hang out together," he said.

"The video games, parents kind of have this false, safe feeling. Oh, well he's just playing a video game," said Menendez-Sierra. "But you don't even think that some of these safe games that are tailored for children, specifically have dangers, because they have chat options, where they can chat with other people."

And not just text chats, which are offered in games likes Fortnite and Roblox. Video games like Minecraft now offer a voice chat option.
