Why Americans turn to conspiracy theories - The Washington Post

As the impeachment inquiry heats up, members of Congress and the media are left with the difficult job of untangling the conspiracy theory that seems to have driven the president's actions in Ukraine: a wild tale of a missing computer server whisked off to Eastern Europe for nefarious, if never entirely clear, purposes, and something involving Joe Biden, his son Hunter and, for good measure, China, too.

Although a strong vein of conspiratorial thinking courses through the right today, dismissing conspiracy theories as a recent product of the "paranoid style" of the American right underestimates their influence on our political culture as a whole! While you're here, how about this:

Sean Duffy Spends First Day at CNN Pushing Pro-Trump Conspiracy Theory Debunked by Network

And yet on Sunday, during his debut appearance as a paid CNN employee, Duffy almost immediately floated the conspiracy theory, which was quickly criticized by other panelists.

"This is a disputed, absurd conspiracy theory that you're talking about right now," said fellow contributor Amanda Carpenter, a conservative pundit. "What you are stating is completely inaccurate and factually wrong," former Obama official Jenn Psaki added. "It is a conspiracy theory on the right wing."

Despite criticism from his fellow panelists, Duffy went back to the same exact playbook again on Monday—and with similar success.

When the congressman began to discuss the CrowdStrike conspiracy theory Monday morning on New Day , anchor Alisyn Camerota immediately cut him off.

"What Mick Mulvaney was talking about was actually trying to find the server that was the DNC server which was at the heart of the Russia investigation," Duffy claimed.

To the moon, all of you conspiracy theorists - amNewYork

One small step for man. One giant leap for nutjobs. Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of one of America's greatest …

* * *

Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of one of America's greatest achievements — the first humans to land on the moon.

When Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin took those first lunar steps on July 21, 1969, Armstrong famously declared, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." That "small step" marked the culmination of centuries of scientific progress, and Americans stood proud.

Well, most Americans. Despite overwhelming evidence, including the collection of moon rocks and NASA images, the conspiracy nuts were soon out in force, claiming the moon landing was an elaborate hoax.

In 1976, writer Bill Kaysing published a conspiracy pamphlet titled "We Never Went to the Moon," claiming the moonwalk footage was a fake, staged in a studio! Why Do People Believe in Conspiracy Theories? | Psychology ...www.psychologytoday.com /.../201801/ ...in- conspiracy -theories My theory of why people like (love) conspiracy theories is - they get a physical rush from them...and the get addicted to that rush. Reasoning and believability go out the window once that addiction sets in hard, people just want that buzz - over and over and over. Alls they want to do is feed the conspiracy beast.!! In 2001, Fox News gave fresh blood to the lunar "truther" movement, airing a "Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon?" special and interviewing a parade of Apollo 11 skeptics, including Kaysing and conspiracy filmmaker Bart Sibrel.

In case you are keeping track:

Sandy Hook father to receive $450,000 from conspiracy theorist, jury says

The claim was made by the retired professor in his book, which argued that the Newtown, Connecticut, mass shooting — which left 20 first-graders and six staff members dead — never happened and was instead a hoax staged by the federal government in an effort to pass stricter gun laws.

A Dane County jury deliberated for almost four hours before slapping Fetzer with the $450,000 fine, the Wisconsin State Journal reported. Fetzer called the amount "absurd" and vowed to appeal, the newspaper reported.

Another week, another crazy EFF conspiracy theory

He seems to be suggesting, seriously, that Mabuza and Eskom only held the press conference at the time and place they did because of Daily Maverick , and that this publication somehow controls Eskom's diary. All of it when Mabuza has already explained why this happened in the way it did. But with enough willingness and a massive dollop of spin on it, this throwaway comment became a centrepiece of another massive conspiracy theory. Ndlozi's tweet, to his 660k followers, might be enough to push the idea on Twitter. For some, it was enough. On SAfm on Friday morning, at least one caller thought this was serious enough to merit further discussion and wanted to know why Eskom had held the press conference at that time just at the insistence of Daily Maverick . For him, a simple fictional tweet was enough to rearrange reality.
