Every September, Apple offers the world a new update of its iOS software for iPhones. This year's version, iOS 13, didn't exactly have a graceful landing; since its release in September, Apple has produced no fewer than five follow-up versions intended to fill feature holes and fix bugs. A sixth version, 13.2, is in beta testing now.
But never mind all that. Apple has said plenty about what it considers the most important new features: Dark Mode, which gives all your apps a slick, white-on-dark, inverted-colors look; QuickPath, which lets you type by swiping sloppily across the relevant keys instead of tapping them, as you can on Android phones; and a rewritten Maps app.

Why WKCR is important - Columbia Daily Spectator
If you don't know, WKCR is the campus radio station at Columbia. We play many genres of music; I think our jazz, new music, and classical departments are far more musically radical than other competing stations in New York. Programmers sign up for a program and curate within the theme of that show. Programmers have control over what music they play within certain abstractly-defined bounds of genre.
One of the first things you see at WKCR is a room so full of records that when you walk through the door, you can't see the other side of the room. Boxes holding records are sprawled across the floor. We have so many that we don't know what to do with them. There are even more CDs stacked up in shelves on the wall, and you wouldn't realize the sheer quantity of them until you open the drawers and they push you back against the records, which brace you from falling backward.

Columbia's Glass Mansions, a duo of Jayna Doyle and Blake Arambula, play catchy, jagged-edged electronic-rock music; their 2018 EP “Ritual” is one of the best examples of merging rock aggression with dance-music propulsion that you’re likely to find. Their show at Eighth State Brewing on Friday has them sharing the stage with the eclectic jazz-pop-soul duo Megan Jean & The KFB and the dark-toned keyboard-and-drums duo Bombay Gasoline. Those are three very different bands to see in one night on one stage, a mix of styles that both Doyle and Arambula are excited about being a part of.
"I like playing mixed-genre shows because you get to play with people you might not normally play with," Doyle says. "It gives the audience a bigger taste of the scene, and people can expand their musical tastes a little bit." And, Arambula adds, that expansion of musical tastes can apply to the musicians as well as the audience. "I can see pieces of what the other acts on the bill do in our music, too," he says. "So I feel like in a way, even though it's called a 'mixed-genre' bill, you'll see similar themes popping up in our music that you might have heard in some the other acts."
Faster Than Sound: Unearthing Daniel Johnston's If: Producer Brian Beattie has an unreleased
In January 2018, Chronicle writer Kevin Curtin spoke with cult legend Daniel Johnston ahead of Austin's inaugural Hi, How Are You Day concert. The outsider artist's performance at the show wound up being his last before passing on Sept. 11, 2019. In what became his final published interview , Johnston offered a reveal:
"I've been working on a new album with Brian Beattie for years, and I hope it comes out real soon."
The LP pulls from sessions spanning 1996-2003, during which the duo also recorded Rejected Unknown and Lost and Found . Johnston's spur-of-the-moment recording requests met their creative match in Beattie, who the Chronicle dubbed a "Mad Scientist on Wheels" in 1996 based on his transportable rig. The producer's frequent trips to Waller ended due to disapproval from Johnston's father.
Following an urging call from Johnston in 2017, Beattie transferred the old files and began assembling the 14-track collection, including theatrical spoken interludes on the B-side. Beattie distinctly recalls the last of many trips to collect feedback on the mixes. Johnston wanted to go to Buc-ee's first.
