Prep Sports: Onsted's Metzger takes sixth at girls golf state - Sports - Ionia Sentinel -

BATTLE CREEK — The girls golf season came to a conclusion Saturday with two Lenawee County teams, and another individual, competing on Day 2 of the Division 4 state final meet at Bedford Valley.

Onsted's Jaime Metzger went into Saturday's round in fourth place and four shots off of the lead and, while she didn't have as good as Saturday, she finished tied for sixth in the state with two round score of 175 (85-90). Metzger tied with Lauren Slotkee of Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian while Jacque O'Neill of Harper Springs and Sara Haupt of Wixom St. Catherine tied for first with two-day totals of 164.

Metzger's score led the Wildcats to a 12th place finish overall as Onsted carded an 866 with Annika Berg (213), Karly VanBrunt (226), Maddalyn Zellen (252) and Carolyn Micallef (291) adding to the total.

Lenawee Christian also qualified in its first year of play and took 17th with a two-day total of 897.

The Central Catholic senior couldn't help steer the Crusaders girls cross country team to a regional berth in 2018. A stress fracture ultimately ended her season early.

In Saturday's district meet at GlenOak, Kling had a big role in what she calls Central's "two-peat."

"Last year I couldn't run, and it kind of sucked crutching around and not being with my team," Kling said. "... It (the injury) got me to where I am now. I'm pretty happy about that."

Future is bright: Junior high girls capture state - Sports - Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise -

On Friday, Bartlesville’s junior high girls team burst to the state championship at the 2019 26th Annual Junior High All-Star battle, held at the Chickasha Sports Complex.

The Lady Bruins tallied just 30 points — like golf, the lesser score wins — to dominate the meet.

Bartlesville’s Gentry Turner bolted to second place overall (12:23.5) in the two-mile competition.

The next four Bartlesville finishers included Alexis Smith (ninth, three points, 13:21.43), Katherine Manley (22nd, seven points, 14:06.34), Maryann Alvey (26th, nine points, 14:16.12) and Payten Pregler (27th, 10 points, 14:17.21).

The next wave of Bartlesville finishers included Morgan Wasemiller (32nd, 14:29.56) and Reese Savage (34th, 14:30.6).

Turner, Smith, Alvey, Pregler and Wasemiller are all eight-graders, which means they will be eligible next year to run in the high school program.

Ten local teams qualify for CIF Southern Section girls' volleyball playoffs - Los Angeles

A total of 10 local teams will compete in the postseason, but the area squads will have some tough draws ahead of them.

The first round of the CIF girls' volleyball playoffs is scheduled to be played on Thursday, with all games scheduled as 6 p.m. starts, unless a new time is mutually agreed upon by the competing schools.

Three Sunset Conference teams received the last three spots in the top division. In addition to the Sea Kings, unranked Laguna Beach and Huntington Beach also were included in the 12-team Division 1 bracket.

The top four seeds – No. 1 Redondo Union, No. 2 Los Angeles Marymount, No. 3 Mater Dei and No. 4 Chatsworth Sierra Canyon – received byes in the first round.

Wave League champion Laguna Beach (30-9) will host Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (26-9), which was the third-place team in the Bay League.

HS Roundup: Hoggard, New Hanover girls tennis bring home regional titles - Sports - Wilmington

Mary Davis Thompson was the singles champion, beating Topsail's Kylee Edwards 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the final. Thompson beat Northern Nash's Chloe Harrington 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinal.

On the doubles side, Peyton Philemon and Frances Coleman teamed up to win the championship.The New Hanover duo beat J.H. Rose's Maryah Stokes and Ginger Evans 6-0, 6-0 in the final, and they topped Fike's Logan Adkins and Chandler Hill 6-0, 6-2 in the final.

New Hanover's Mary Archer Boyd and Ann McBryde Barker lost both of their matches as a doubles team Saturday, but they still qualified for next week's state championships.

Hoggard's doubles pairing of Elizabeth Vollmin and Macy Morrison brought home some hardware by winning the doubles championship Saturday.

Vollmin and Morrison topped Piper KNorr and Karen Galush of Cardinal Gibbons 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 in the final.
