NASA engineer's 'helical engine' may violate the laws of physics | New Scientist

For every action, there is a reaction: that is the principle on which all space rockets operate, blasting propellant in one direction to travel in the other! Designed by David Burns at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, the "helical engine" exploits mass-altering effects known to occur at near-light speed! ICON ...!! Burns has posted a paper describing the concept to NASA's technical reports server.

It has been met with scepticism from some quarters, but Burns believes his concept is worth pursuing. "I'm comfortable with throwing it out there," he says. "If someone says it doesn't work, I'll be the first to say, it was worth a shot."

To get to grips with the principle of Burns's engine, picture a box on a frictionless surface. Inside that box is a rod, along which a ring can slide! NASA advances Trump-led manufacturing push with six innovative technologies | Fox News

The Trump administration has pushed American manufacturing as a cornerstone of economic growth. According to a report released last year , the White House said that “advanced manufacturing…is an engine of America’s economic power and a pillar of its national security," adding that advances in manufacturing have played "a major role in America’s global economic dominance in the 20th century.”

However, the report warned that “this century saw dramatic changes, with significant declines in U.S. manufacturing employment starting in the 1990s and accelerating losses during the 2008 recession.”

NASA, which not only develops but builds extremely complex aerospace systems, is a big part of the manufacturing push . The government space agency has come up with a list of six emerging technologies that are “ripe” for commercialization in the country.

NASA Slammed a Rocket Body Into the Moon for Science 10 Years Ago Today | Space

Ten years ago today (Oct. 9), NASA slammed a hunk of space junk into the moon , forever changing our perception of Earth's nearest neighbor.

The space agency's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) missions launched together on June 18, 2009, riding atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.

LRO sped to lunar orbit, where it continues to operate today. But LCROSS remained attached to the Atlas V's Centaur upper stage and went into a long, elliptical path around Earth that put it on an intentional collision course with the moon.

The goal was to slam into a permanently shadowed polar crater, to see if there was water ice down in those frigid depths — and, if so, how much. India's Chandrayaan-1 mission had recently spotted evidence of water across much of the lunar surface, and LCROSS aimed to assess the moon's stores of this precious resource in greater depth.

Clock ticks as SpaceX builds craft for NASA

On Thursday, he put a happier face on the situation, standing next to Musk at SpaceX's Hawthorne headquarters and saying he was pleased with what he saw.

"Elon and I are in strong agreement ... that the one thing we have under development that is of the highest priority is launching American astronauts on American rockets from American soil," Bridenstine said at a news conference that also included the two astronauts who will be the first to ride in the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.

But the fact remains that if neither SpaceX nor Boeing has its capsule ready to fly astronauts on a regular basis by September, NASA will be in a tight spot: It probably would have to buy last-minute seats on a Russian spacecraft, a potentially expensive and politically fraught move.

At the same time, SpaceX doesn't behave like a standard aerospace contractor, which is disconcerting to some at NASA, said Lori Garver, who served as the agency's deputy administrator from 2009 to 2013.

NASA is getting ready for the first all-female spacewalk — again - The Verge

Originally, Koch was slated to do a spacewalk with her then-crewmate, Anne McClain, which would have been the first all-female spacewalk in the history of space travel! NASA's newest mission, ICON, has launched - KMIZ www.abc17news.com / new s/national-world/ nasas - newest - mission - ...to...NASA's ICON mission to explore where Earth's weather meets space weather is expected to launch Thursday evening at 9:30 p.m. ET from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.!! The week of the spacewalk, however, NASA announced that McClain would no longer be working with Koch but would be replaced by her male colleague, Nick Hague. NASA cited spacesuit availability as the culprit; McClain realized she needed a medium-sized spacesuit, but only one was available at the time, and that one went to Koch.

But this time around, NASA has the spacesuits ready. Another spacesuit was launched to the ISS this year, this one already in a medium configuration, according to Kirk Shireman, NASA's program manager for the International Space Station. That means there are now two medium-sized spacesuits prepped for the spacewalk.

NASA claims the decision to launch this second medium-sized suit had to do with the number of spacewalks coming up and which crew members will be available in the months ahead. "We don't do it for a specific crew member," Shireman said during a press conference on Friday. "Actually, what we do is we look over the next two years, and look at all the crew members who are [spacewalk] certified, and say, 'Okay, what's the sweet spot?'" Shireman noted that over the next couple of years, a lot of "medium suit people" will be heading to the ISS.
