WASHINGTON — There are so many nations eager to join NASA's push to the moon that the coalition of 15 International Space Station countries may have even more company for the nascent Artemis lunar project, according to the agency.
In a press conference Thursday (Oct. 24), NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said that at least 26 nations had already met with him here at the International Astronautical Congress to discuss the Artemis lunar program and possibilities for contributing! A private art collector in Miami has purchased 8,000 prints of NASA's space program dating back to the mid 1950s, many of which have never been shown publicly! On Thursday, Budja unveiled 40 of the prints for public view at the Continuum North Tower in Miami, an exclusive private residence in South Beach. Keith Marks, board president of the condominium, says it's rare that they open their doors to the public, but consider the 50-year anniversary of the Apollo 11's historic moon landing a "more than appropriate" occasion to do so.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine presented former U.S. Rep. John Culberson with a Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest honor the agency can give to a private citizen.
Culberson, a Republican, served in Congress from 2001 to 2019, during which time he representing Texas’ 7th Congressional District in west Houston. He was defeated by Democrat Lizzie Fletcher last year.
Bridenstine presented the award to Culberson during a ceremony at the 70th International Astronautical Conference in Washington. The medal is awarded to individuals not employed by the U.S. government for sustained performance that embodies multiple contributions on NASA projects, programs or initiatives.
“We are so grateful for all of your leadership and all of your help, and oh by the way, all of your funding for our missions,” Bridenstine said.
NASA Needs to Get With the Times When It Comes to Planetary Protection, Report Finds | Space
NASA's current planetary-protection policies reflect a bygone era of space exploration and need to be updated, a new report argues.
Planetary protection refers to the effort to keep the solar system as pristine as possible. The main goals are to minimize the odds that our spacecraft infect other worlds, such as Mars, with Earth microbes (a process known as forward contamination) and to reduce the risk of alien bugs getting loose on our planet after sample-return missions (back contamination).
NASA's planetary-protection guidelines follow those established by an international scientific organization called the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), which began such work way back in 1958. The U.S. space agency's policies have changed some over the decades, but NASA recognized that additional revisions are likely needed now to deal with the fast-changing exploration landscape.

NASA Astronauts Complete the First All-Female Spacewalk - The New York Times
NASA reached a milestone on Friday when two Americans, tasked with replacing a power controller, ventured out of the International Space Station: the astronauts, Christina Koch and Jessica Meir, became the first to take part in an all-female spacewalk.
The walk, which lasted seven hours and 17 minutes and included a brief call with President Trump, was not purposefully planned by the agency. As NASA explained it, one was bound to happen eventually because of the increasing number of female astronauts.
But news of the milestone attracted far greater interest than spacewalks normally do, and on Friday, American officials celebrated it as a historic achievement. They pointed to the agency's ambitious goals to put the first woman and the next man on the moon, and then to forge a path to Mars.
"You're doing an incredible job," Mr. Trump told the astronauts on Friday during a call to the space station. "This is a first step, because we're going to the moon, and then we're going to Mars."

WASHINGTON — NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine is looking to land humans on Mars in the 2030s as he recruits partners of the International Space Station to help the agency land humans on the moon by 2024, according to his remarks at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC).
Bridenstine's pledge is similar (with a later deadline) to promises he made in the spring. In April, in a hearing of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, he suggested NASA astronauts could walk on Mars by 2033. In that meeting and also in May, Bridenstine added that pushing sooner for the moon would make it possible to bring astronauts to Mars faster , which is a long-term goal of the Trump administration.

The unknown piece, however, is how NASA will marshal international support for that ambitious Mars goal. Planning for the mid-2030s sounds early stage now, but the technological obstacles facing Mars-bound astronauts are immense. Problems to solve include how astronauts will stay healthy during several months of travel in space, how they will have enough food on the Red Planet , or how to run a mission with several minutes of time delay in communications between Mission Control on Earth and the astronaut crew on Mars.
