Free Steam games for Veterans and their families - VAntage Point

Most Veterans who have served in the past 20 years are probably familiar with video games. From barracks LAN parties, to marathon sessions of Madden NFL at the MWR while downrange, it’s safe to say Veterans like to play video games. Studies have shown that video games also help Veterans recover from some mental health challenges, providing an escape while boosting confidence, personal growth, leadership, and social connections.

Games to Grunts is a program of Operation Suppy Drop, a chapter based Veteran Service Organization 501c3.

Game publishers and others donate game keys to Games to Grunts, which in turn distributes the games. Because not all games are distributed with unlimited keys, it is a first come first serve model.

Eligibility is determined through ID.me, a third-party identify verification service that is also available to use on VA.gov .

Misinterpreted Video Game Reference Sparked Active Shooter Scare at Ballston Theater, Police Say

As moviegoers watched a horror film on a Saturday night last month, a boy yelled something about a shooter. People ran from the theater in fear, and officers shut down the area for hours, searching for a gunman.

Arlington County police responded to a "false report of a possible shooter" at the Regal Ballston Quarter theater on Sept. 14 after a boy seeing the movie with a group shouted a reference to a video game, police said.

The boy, who police did not name, will not be charged. He did not commit a crime or intend to harm or scare anyone, the department concluded after a weekslong investigation.

The Washington Post names staff for Launcher, a new section dedicated to video gaming and esports

Announcement from Sports Editor Matt Vita and Managing Editors Cameron Barr and Emilio Garcia-Ruiz:

We are excited to announce the creation of Launcher, a new section from the Sports department of The Post devoted to covering video gaming and esports.

Debuting Oct. 15, Launcher will feature coverage and analysis of the people, companies, teams and trends that make up this rapidly growing industry. Combining deep familiarity with the video gaming world and The Post's journalistic excellence, Launcher will offer accountability reporting, cultural exploration, artistic criticism and instructive guides.

Sports assignment editor Mike Hume, who came up with the idea of pursuing this coverage area, will lead the Launcher team as the site's editor. Mike joined The Post in 2014, after five years at ESPN, to oversee our reporters covering the NBA, NFL and Major League Baseball. He also edited Neil Greenberg's Fancy Stats blog, and as hockey editor spearheaded The Post's award-winning coverage of the Capitals' Stanley Cup championship in 2018. Mike has been hard at work for months, along with a growing team: Audience's Gene Park (reporter), Video's Jhaan Elker (video producer) and Design's Joseph Moore (art director).

Indie game makers open up about the money they actually make - The Verge

The following 12 testimonies detail appropriately varied situations — the hopes and fears of these indie game makers — and how, ultimately, they're able to continue sustaining themselves.

I started working on Ritual of the Moon in 2014, and I applied for a Canadian arts grant in 2015 receiving $10,000 CA. With such small funding, people are just getting honorariums for their work. None of us are getting paid what our time is worth, so I wouldn't expect anyone to be working on it close to full time or even part time. I know it's unheard of to sell a mobile game for more than $3 [ Ritual of the Moon retails for $9.99], but I spent so much time on it, and I think it's really precious. We're pricing things so low that things do become really unsustainable, and the expectations are that everything should have everything for free and not care about who made it and how much work it took.
