Chemistry Club’s Halloween Spooktacular makes science fun - The Rocky Mountain Collegian

'Tis the season for some fright, trick-or-treating and all the creepy critters waiting to scare you out of your seat.

On Oct. 27, the Colorado State University Chemistry Club is opening its doors to their annual Halloween show from 3-6 p.m. Last year, the family-friendly Halloween Spooktacular hosted over 1,100 community members . This year will be a little different, as booths and activity tables will start from the lobby of the Chemistry Research Building and extend outside over to the Yates Building.

"There is a lot of planning that goes into putting on an event of this magnitude," said Maggie Wellman, a third-year chemistry major and one of the outreach coordinators. "One of the biggest challenges we face is anticipating how many people are coming and how to accommodate all of them."

The club is dedicated to making an educational and fantastical show for the community and aims to add some Halloween fright into the mix.

The science of fun learning: How classroom education can be made exciting for students

Children would retain a concept or a lesson if it presented to them in a fun, exciting and novel way.

Many parents place education and fun at opposite ends of the pole. Mine did back in the day; and it wasn't a particularly enjoyable experience for me, so to say. However, today's reality is a far cry from my days of yore.

Thanks to multiple research studies and the need for developing foundational skills in kids at the right age. A positive realisation has dawned upon parents—children learn best when learning is made fun, engaging and entertaining for them. Rote learning is a thing of the past It's important to note that information in our brains is continuously moving in & out every second, every day.

Children would retain a concept or a lesson if it presented to them in a fun, exciting and novel way. Then that particular concept will be understood over everything else that their brain sees. Children will automatically store that information over all other sensory input! Skip Lines & Save Seats Get To The Front With Quick Queue Reserve Seats To Your Favorite Show!! They will feel more enthusiastic and engaged.

Mechanical engineer's simple running hack is fun and increases efficiency -- ScienceDaily

Attention runners: The next time you go out for a jog, you might want to strap a light resistance band between your feet. This rather quirky but oddly effective hack, according to UC Santa Barbara mechanical engineer Elliot Hawkes, could make you a more efficient runner by approximately 6.4%.

"In running, the energy is mostly wasted," said Hawkes, who conducted research on this topic while at Stanford University! We host many interactive science booths and chemistry demonstration shows ...!! His paper appears in the Journal of Experimental Biology .

Running is an extremely inefficient activity for the human body (which is why it's also a calorie-torching workout). According to Hawkes' study, for every 10 calories burned, less than one calorie is needed to maintain a constant forward velocity! With a large amount of interest from the Fort Collins community and the ever-growing community members that partake in the free event, all Chemistry Club and the Department of Chemistry can expect the event to do is grow.!! The other nine calories are spent keeping us from falling as we pound the pavement with our bodymass, as well as braking and accelerating the swinging leg. Hawkes noticed this inefficiency while biking at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco at a cycling track concentric with a running track.
