For dedicated reality TV fans, there's a pretty high chance they've stumbled upon Colton Underwood in one of the many reality shows he's been featured on throughout his career. From being a former NFL player on dating shows to appearing in singing reality competitions to getting cast in season 4 of The Traitors , Underwood has been on TV for a long time now.
Over the years, Underwood struggled to come out as gay , and didn't do so until a 2021 interview with Good Morning America . Following his coming out, Underwood found love, got married to Jordan C. Brown, and even became a father. In the meantime, he was seen in various reality shows across different networks and streaming services.
It all goes back to this: Underwood's big introduction to reality TV fans happened on The Bachelorette season 14, led by Becca Kufrin, who had recently gotten engaged to Arie Luyendyk Jr. on The Bachelor but had to face one of the most dramatic blindsides in the history of this franchise.
As the story goes, Luyendyk called off his engagement to Kufrin after their season came to an end, and subsequently chose another contestant from his season of The Bachelor to be with. With so much love and support going around for Kufrin, who was understandably very traumatized from that experience, producers brought her right back as the leading woman of The Bachelorette .
Underwood was one of the men vying for Kufrin's love. Oh, and in case you didn't know: Underwood made it all the way to the final four in Kufrin's season.
Despite not having the splashiest run on Bachelor in Paradise , it did seem to solidify Underwood as the lead of The Bachelor season 23.
The promo cycle for Underwood's season of The Bachelor is — particularly in hindsight — quite jarring and problematic. There were several infantilizing elements to the entire narrative, which focused on branding Underwood as ⁘the virgin Bachelor .⁘ It's also worth noting that this season's grand finale did not include a proposal from Underwood.
