The former waitress-turned-pop star beat fellow contestant Justin Guarini in the final on Sept. 4, with nearly 23 million watching from home.
The Burleson, Texas native became an icon overnight. Once a regular girl, Clarkson was now a potential superstar with a burgeoning music career.
Reflecting on her "American Idol" win, Clarkson said it was hard for her to perform "A Moment Like This" for the finale. The song was written specifically for the winner of the first season of "American Idol" to perform.
Clarkson said her friends and family members had been supporting her throughout her journey. Even though Clarkson said she was too busy post-win to talk to anyone, she could feel their love in messages.
"They're ecstatic all over my voicemail," she said with a smile. "They're just so excited. Everybody's on my phone yelling. They're so supportive. I had the best time ever."
She also was humble about her win. "There are so many talented people out there. Who would've thunk it, walking in, out of 10,000 people? I never would have thought that," she said.
Clarkson said that she's already started mapping out her career. Along with securing a manager, she said she was getting ready to release two singles — "A Moment Like This" and "Before Your Love" — and also embark on the "American Idols Live! Tour," which featured the top 10 contestants from the first season.
