URBANA, Ill. — Do you often extinguish a bad mood by taking a trip to the local gym? While it’s hardly a secret that working out can improve both mental and physical health, new research reveals that exercise may also improve brain health in a more direct manner.
"The hippocampus is a crucial area for learning and memory, and therefore cognitive health," explains Ki Yun Lee, a Ph.D. student in mechanical science and engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the study’s lead author, in a media release .
