Several new studies confirm the success of a test by the American space agency NASA to crash a spacecraft into an asteroid .
The studies suggest the experiment was an important first step in learning how spacecraft might be able to protect Earth from asteroids or other space objects that might threaten the planet.
NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day 11 March 2023: Asteroid Bennu in 3D | Tech News
Space is vast and terrifying, but at the same time, it is deeply intriguing and mysterious. Our fascination with space and understanding the origin of the solar system has led scientists to one of its biggest celestial nemeses.
NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day is a picture showing the Bennu asteroid as it was captured by the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft while it took a last glance before flying towards the Earth. Bennu is a carbonaceous asteroid in the Apollo group discovered by the LINEAR Project on 11 September 1999.
NASA's DART: How 'regular' folks - not astronomers - captured the impact
Now, according to a recent press release, their names are being honored in a paper published in Nature.
NASA's first test mission for planetary defense, DART, which seeks to test and validate a method to protect Earth in case of an asteroid strike, reached Dimorphos, a moon of the near-Earth asteroid Didymos on September 26, 2022.
NASA Says This Asteroid Has a 'Very Small' Chance of Ruining Valentine's Day in ...
Admittedly that chance is currently rated as "very small" by NASA and around 1 in 625 (or 0.16 percent) by ESA . You're free to interpret and respond to those odds as you wish, but we won't be moving to an underground bunker just yet.
The asteroid is ranked 1 on the Torino scale used to assess these objects, so it's only just above zero and a long way from the highest score of 10.
