Asteroid 2023 EY to sweep closer than moon tonight

The newly discovered near-Earth asteroid 2023 EY will sweep closely, but safely, past Earth on March 16-17, 2023. At its closest, it’ll be within about 149,000 miles (about 239,000 km) of Earth. That’s about 62% of the moon’s average distance.

The asteroid is estimate to be in the 13-to-29-meter range (about 43 feet to 95 feet) in diameter. That puts it in a size range similar to the Chelyabinsk meteor, which was approximately 17 to 20 meters in diameter.

See The House-Sized Asteroid Found Monday Whizz By Earth This Week

A newly found asteroid about the same size size of a house will pass between the Earth and the Moon on Friday, March 17, 2023.

It might sound a big distance, but large asteroids that come that close are defined as a potentially hazardous object.

However, the smaller—and completely non-threatening—2023 EY will get to within a fraction of that. It will pass a mere 149,000 miles/240,000 kilometers from Earth. That's slightly less than two-thirds of the Earth-Moon distance.
