A small asteroid about the size of a truck passed within 2,200 miles of Earth on Thursday. At 7:27 p.m.
The asteroid, called 2023 BU, was only recently discovered: Scientists did not know it existed until Crimean amateur astronomer Gennadiy Borisov spotted it on January 21.
Within three days, dozens of observations from around the world helped determine the asteroid's orbit, highlighting the importance of both seasoned and amateur astronomers worldwide.
NASA System Predicts Small Asteroid to Pass Close by Earth This Week

This orbital diagram from CNEOS's close approach viewer shows 2023 BU's trajectory – in red – during its close approach with Earth on Jan. 26, 2023. The asteroid will pass about 10 times closer to Earth than the orbit of geosynchronous satellites, shown in green line.
This view from NASA's Scout system shows the deflection of asteroid 2023 BU's trajectory – in red – caused by Earth's gravity. The orbit of geosynchronous satellites is shown in green, and the orbit of the Moon is depicted by the gray oval.

Asteroid mining start-up to launch first missions - Taipei Times

Asteroid mining start-up AstroForge Inc is planning to launch its first two missions to space this year as it seeks to extract and refine metals from deep space.
The first launch, scheduled for April, is to test AstroForge's technique for refining platinum from a sample of asteroid-like material. The second, planned for October, would scout for an asteroid near Earth to mine.

A couple of newly discovered asteroids whizzed past our planet earlier this month, tracing their own loop around the sun. These two aren't any more special than the thousands of other asteroids in the ever-growing catalog of near-Earth objects.
Also this month, the same Jerusalem Post reporter, Aaron Reich, described another pair of asteroids as "approximately the size of 100 adult pugs.

Grounded spacecraft look for new targets, including asteroid Apophis | Space

Scientists are working hard to try to salvage a pair of spacecraft that lost their launch — and the solution might include the most notorious asteroid out there, Apophis.
NASA's Janus mission was designed to send two spacecraft past two binary asteroids , giving scientists their first close look at this category of object.
James Webb Spots Asteroid With Its Own Saturn-Like Rings

In 2013, astronomers made a first-of-its-kind discovery : Chariklo, a distinct type of object known as a Centaur that's somewhere between an asteroid and a comet, had its own Saturn-like rings — two of them, in fact.
"Spectra from ground-based telescopes had hinted at this ice, but the exquisite quality of the Webb spectrum revealed the clear signature of crystalline ice for the first time," said Noemí Pinilla-Alonso, a planetary scientist who led the observations, in a NASA statement .
A recently discovered asteroid had 'a very close encounter' with Earth | KMUW

There was no reason to panic — an asteroid shot past our planet harmlessly Thursday night, NASA says. The space agency says the object — the size of a large moving truck — made one of the closest approaches to Earth ever when it zipped over the Southern Hemisphere.
The asteroid, dubbed 2023 BU, was only 2,200 miles above the Earth's surface when it passed over South America's southern edge at 7:27 p.m. ET, NASA says.

(CNN) -- An asteroid the size of a box truck made one of the closest passes of planet Earth ever recorded.
The small near-Earth asteroid, called 2023 BU, zipped over the southern tip of South America at 7:27 p.m. ET Thursday about 2,200 miles (3,540 kilometers) above Earth's surface. This distance was well within the orbit of global satellites.
