Astronomers Spotted a Tiny Asteroid A Few Hours Before it Impacted the Earth, and Predicted ...

2022 WJ1 was pretty small – only about 1 m wide, and posed no actual threat to anyone or anything on the ground. But the planetary defense network is designed to catch much bigger potential threats.

The Chelyabinsk meteor was 20 times the size of 2022 WJ1 and, therefore, would have been much easier to see if astronomers had the same resources in place as they do now. Walking through how 2022 WJ1 was tracked helps illuminate how much planetary detection has improved.

Why Frogs Survived the Asteroid That Wiped Out the Dinosaurs | Science| Smithsonian Magazine

No creature could have prepared for the disaster. When an asteroid struck the Earth 66 million years ago, the world was shaken up as earthquakes reverberated out from the impact site and falling debris from the collision heated the air to the equivalent of an oven on broil.

The end-Cretaceous mass extinction wiped out roughly 75 percent of known fossil species virtually overnight. Not only did all the non-bird dinosaurs go extinct, but mass extinctions also decimated lizards, mammals and various other organisms. But frogs fared better than average.

New minerals discovered in massive meteorite may reveal clues to asteroid formation

The two minerals found came from a single 70 gram slice that was sent to the U of A for classification, and there already appears to be a potential third mineral under consideration.

The two newly discovered minerals have been named elaliite and elkinstantonite. The first receives its name from the meteorite itself, dubbed the "El Ali" meteorite because it was found in near the town of El Ali, in the Hiiraan region of Somalia.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Michelle Thompson is a geologist. But while “geo” means earth, she studies things that are decidedly unearthly, or at least extraterrestrial: the moon and asteroids.

Two Point Campus' Space Academy expansion launches in December | Rock Paper Shotgun

University sim Two Point Campus is shipping its students off out into the actual universe when the game’s first big expansion arrives on PC on December 6th.

For DLC, Space Academy is as straightforward as it sounds.

It’s the extra-curricular activities that intrigue me about this expansion though. Devs Two Point Studios say you can host a sci-fi convention at the student union, invite a cosmic Elvis for a gig night, and join a time-travelling society.
