NASA revises requirements for ISS private astronaut missions - SpaceNews

WASHINGTON — NASA is changing rules for future private astronaut missions to the International Space Station, including requiring such missions to be led by a former NASA astronaut.

In an Aug. 1 procurement notice , NASA announced changes in requirements for future solicitations for private astronaut missions, or PAMs, to the station.

In January 2022, pioneering space infrastructure company Masten Space Systems was preparing for its first mission to the Moon. "It will be the first of many Masten missions," said the company at the time.

First reported by Canadian space media Parabolic Arc , news of the company's troubled financial situation follows a series of struggles, including layoffs on June 24 and the subsequent furlough of the rest of its staff for July.

NASA grant will see Virtual Incision's surgical robot go to space

Lincoln, Nebraska-based Virtual Incision received a grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to use the miniaturized robotic-associated surgery (RAS) platform on the 2024 technology demonstration mission.

MIRA includes a small, self-contained surgical device inserted through a single midline umbilical incision in the patient's abdomen, allowing for complex, multi-quadrant abdominal surgeries utilizing existing minimally invasive tools and techniques that are familiar to surgeons.
