Two Giant Asteroids Up to 1,000ft Wide Set for Close Encounter With Earth

Two large asteroids—one of which could measure more than 1,000 feet across—are set to have a close encounter with Earth next week.

The first of the two space rocks to make a close approach is known as 2016 CZ31. According to figures from NASA 's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) database, this object will come no closer than around 1.7 million miles to our planet at 11:02 p.m. UTC, or 7:02 p.m.

NASA was "completely wrong" about the asteroid Bennu

The mission: In 2016, NASA launched the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft to get an up-close look at the asteroid Bennu. Two years and 1.2 billion miles later, the spacecraft arrived at its destination and began surveying Bennu from as close as 4 miles above its surface.

In 2020, NASA took the mission a step further, sending OSIRIS-REx to the asteroid's surface to collect a sample — something no NASA spacecraft had ever done before.

Surprise Asteroid Mystery Unraveled – Barreling Toward Earth From Blind Spot

By University of Central Florida July 20, 2022 There are almost 30,000 known asteroids according to the Center for Near Earth Studies. While few pose an immediate threat, there is a chance one of significant size could hit the earth and cause catastrophic damage.

When asteroid 2019 OK suddenly appeared barreling toward Earth on July 25, 2019, Luisa Fernanda Zambrano-Marin and the team of astronomers at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico quickly sprang into action.

Upcoming Psyche Mission Could Help Determine if Asteroid is Actually a Protoplanet - The Debrief

Protoplanets are large collections of matter found in orbit around distant stars, or even our Sun, which have the potential to form into planets.

Now, in advance of NASA’s Psyche mission scheduled for later this year, planetary scientists have produced the most detailed map yet of the unusual asteroid, which may help determine whether its unusual metallic structure represents a prospective protoplanet as well.

An Asteroid Skipping Like A Stone Over Water Left A Rich Legacy | IFLScience

The recent discovery of numerous lumps of metal-rich stones near Aletai, Xinjiang, puzzled geologists.

Returning space missions must carefully tune the angle at which they hit the atmosphere, the window famously made narrower for Apollo 13  due to damage to the heat shield.

With just the right entry angle, however, the asteroid could bounce off the atmosphere, losing some of its energy in the process. This would slow it down, leading to a subsequent entry a few hundred kilometers further along its path.

A unique stone-skipping-like trajectory of asteroid Aletai

Meteoroids and asteroids can invade the Earth's atmosphere at different entry angles and velocities to break into fragments in the atmosphere and fall as meteor showers to create funnels and craters.
