Astronomers find second known Earth Trojan asteroid | NSF - National Science Foundation

An international team of astronomers observed 2020 XL5 and confirmed it is an Earth Trojan asteroid orbiting the sun along the same path as Earth. 2020 XL5 is the second, and larger, Earth Trojan asteroid discovered.

2020 XL5 is almost three-fourths of a mile wide. The other Earth Trojan asteroid, 2010 TK7, is approximately 400 yards across, about one-fourth of a mile.

It seemed like the most dangerous asteroid in a decade, but it definitely won't hit Earth | Space

A recently discovered asteroid seemed to be on a trajectory to hit Earth next year, but orbit recalculation eventually revealed it will miss our planet.

The 230-feet-wide (70 meters) asteroid 2022 EA1 was discovered on Jan. 7 and frightened space defenders because it appeared bound to collide with our planet on July 4, 2023 — too soon to launch a deflection mission, according to a statement by the European Space Agency (ESA).

How Many Moons Can an Asteroid Have? - Sky & Telescope - Sky & Telescope

The discovery of the first quadruple asteroid system raises the question: Is there a limit to how many moons an asteroid can have?

Recently, astronomers found a third moon orbiting the asteroid 130 Elektra, breaking the record for moons among asteroid systems. The discovery of the first quadruple asteroid raises the question, just how many moons can an asteroid have? And where do these moons come from?

An Asteroid Impact Could Wipe Out an Entire City – NASA's Planetary Defense Plans To Prevent a ...

The Earth exists in a dangerous environment. Cosmic bodies, like asteroids and comets, are constantly zooming through space and often crash into our planet. Most of these are too small to pose a threat, but some can be cause for concern .

As a scholar who studies space and international security , it is my job to ask what the likelihood of an object crashing into the planet really is – and whether governments are spending enough money to prevent such an event.

This long-lost asteroid impact was so big its debris left more than 30 craters | Space

Ricochet from a meteorite impact on Earth created a huge 'field' of craters that so far, we have only seen examples of on other planets.

The unique site in southeast Wyoming has more than 30 craters that were formed about 280 million years ago, researchers said in a new study. The craters were created after a meteorite impact hundreds of miles (or kilometers) away blew boulders of bedrock into the air.
