This week, the Alt.Latino team revisits one of our classic episodes from 2020 and takes a closer look at the genre that has become known as Latin Urban, which, for the past decade, has become the dominant influence in Latin pop music.
Landmarks: Community bands march to the beat of an old drum, and they're 'getting stronger and
The pandemic had musicians everywhere worried about when they'd next perform, or even play in the same room with others.
But Sarah Jo Ritchie wasn't worried, at least too much. Ritchie, a coronet player who coordinates the South Holland Municipal Band, looked into the past for reassurance. The group had already survived one pandemic.
Toronto singer Ralph proving herself to be the Swiss Army knife of Canadian pop music |
TORONTO - Standing in her backyard on a drizzly summer afternoon, pop singer Ralph is proving to be a tenacious trooper of the Canadian independent music scene.
Rather than bowing out from a photoshoot in the rain, she's slipped into a silver rain jacket and agreed to play along with a visual gag. The idea has her gripping a bouquet of pink roses in a subtle wink to the TikTok fame that blindsided her a little over a month ago.

F9 Soundtrack Guide: Every Song Explained | Screen Rant
The F9 soundtrack, like all soundtracks of the Fast Saga , offers a healthy allotment of both well-established artists and various newcomers in the hip-hop, R&B, electro, and Latin genres.
With filming locations ranging from London to Tbilisi and Los Angeles to Thailand, some genre-mixing is to be expected with the F9 soundtrack.
Pussycat Dolls Singer Nicole Scherzinger Rejected This Rihanna Jam
Nicole Scherzinger is best known as one of the faces of The Pussycat Dolls, a pop music version of a talented group of beautiful women who already toured the country as a novelty act. However, Scherzinger’s music career goes far beyond her former band.
“I pretty much executive-produced those records. That music felt like my music,” explaining the group’s success in greater detail later on. We had quite a machine behind it, so things happened very focused and very fast,” Scherzinger told The Guardian .
Dazzling Dualities: A Review of Bryan Away's "Canyons to Sawdust" | Newcity Music
Charting influences in pop music can be a difficult endeavor.
"Canyons to Sawdust" is also a through-conceived pop-music suite, along the lines of the mid-sixties albums Wilson crafted for the Beach Boys like "Pet Sounds" and "Smiley Smile.
"The Lake," the first full song on the album (and its debut single), is earnest, urgent orchestral pop, and its 6/8 time signature is an indication of Bryan Away's audacity; I can't immediately think of another pop singer-songwriter who's opened an album with what is essentially a waltz.
OPINION | CRITICAL MASS: 'Southern Soul' — Williams pays props to Joe South
Lucinda Williams covers Joe South's "Games People Play" on her recently released album "Southern Soul: From Memphis to Muscle Shoals and More."
It's a very good cover, not surprising given Williams' pedigree and her sense of history and place. The 1968 original is a startling record, modern-sounding if you disregard the "sock it to you" reference.
Will DaBaby Survive His Blacklisting Like Morgan Wallen Did? | Time
D aBaby’s career is over—at least, if you take the word of thousands of people on Twitter. On July 25, while delivering a rant at the Rolling Loud Festival in Miami, the rapper veered into homophobic territory, mocking gay men and those with HIV/AIDS.
DaBaby and Wallen might seem to arise out of near-opposite worlds, but a lot binds them together. They’re almost the same age, with their upbringings separated by a state line: Wallen grew up in Sneedville, Tenn., while DaBaby grew up in Charlotte, N.C.
